Overview

Mukambi Safari Lodge is a substantial, family-owned riverside property in Kafue National Park, northern Zambia. The lodge offers spacious, well-appointed accommodation, a large swimming pool, and a good choice of land and water-based activities. A straightforward 3 ½ hour drive from Lusaka airport, Mukambi is open year-round, and is a great option for travellers keen to explore Zambia’s genuine unspoilt wilderness. More adventurous guests might choose to combine a stay at the lodge with a visit to its smaller and more remote sister property, Mukambi Plains Tented Camp. Kafue is Zambia’s largest national park by far, yet to date it remains relatively undiscovered by tourism. The park promises prolific bird and wildlife viewing including lion, elephant, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, zebra, and hippo, plus good sightings of the elusive wild dog.

The lodge’s airy stone-and-thatch main area comprises a comfortable lounge with open fire, a bar area, souvenir shop, and a large restaurant where guests enjoy hearty buffets and three course evening meals. Outside is an extensive terrace with seating and tranquil views of the Kafue River, plus a good sized swimming pool. Wi-Fi and mobile phone reception are available throughout.

Activities include twice-daily day and evening game drives, with direct boat access across the river into a wildlife-rich area of the national park. Seasonal guided walks are available during the May to November dry season. Fishing excursions are available, along with day and evening boat excursions, perfect for relaxing amidst the wildlife and surroundings. Cultural visits to the local school are encouraged, and guests are welcome to donate English language books and stationery for the children should they so wish.

A choice of accommodation includes tents, chalets, and a family unit. Eight spacious, thatched chalets sleep two guests in either a double or two single beds, draped with mosquito nets. The ensuite bathrooms have shower, WC, and washbasin. Outside is a private veranda with seating and lovely views of the river. Also available are four well-appointed, roomy safari tents with double beds and mosquito nets, handmade wooden furniture, and an indulgent outdoor bathroom with freestanding bath, shower, WC, and washbasin. Sliding glass doors lead onto a private veranda with seating and wonderful waterside views.

Families are extremely welcome. Children under four stay free of charge, with discounts available for guests under 12 years. A family villa sleeps up to four guests, with one double and one twin bedroom, plus a comfortable lounge area. Two ensuite bathrooms comprise shower, washbasin with vanity unit, and WC. Outside is an extensive private veranda with seating, again directly overlooking the river. Note that there is a minimum age of six years for participation in game drives, although prior arrangement can sometimes be made for younger children. As the camp is unfenced and set right beside the water, families are reminded that children should be supervised at all times.

  • I was also just about to email you to thank you and the team for arranging yet again, another wonderful experience.

Mount Kenya was spectacular and wild - I think I prefer it to Kili in many ways. The entire support team was professional, friendly and all round fantastic in making sure that we were safe, well fed and well looked after. In particular, we would commend Peter the guide as well as Paul one of the porters who doubled-up as his deputy on summit day. Our route was often shrouded in mist and rain that rapidly gathered in the valleys and moorlands, and we were very impressed at how Peter managed to navigate us safely through all of that notwithstanding. In addition, we loved learning about the history of Mount Kenya from him in the evenings. And ofcourse, I was blown away by the lovely birthday surprise at the end complete with balloons and a delicious cake that had journeyed with us from day 1. One thing we might recommend because of the sudden change in weather (it would sometimes get extremely cold and wet) is for the equipment list to be a little bit more detailed in terms of its recommendations e.g. layers to be moisture-wicking, walking boots be waterproof, doubling up on socks to avoid blisters etc.

El Karama is a beautiful conservancy and the lodge a true labour of love. Great hospitality in a relaxed environment. Delicious, fresh food. We enjoyed the drives, even if we didn't see much wildlife as the heavens opened on us for the last two outings. However, since it was very much geared towards families, I am not sure if I would stay again without kids. That said, I think it was perfect for a 3d/2n stay post mountain, and a much better choice than flying to the masai mara given the limited time we had.

Our transits were smooth. Samuel the driver was always on time, drove safely and kept the vehicle clean.

So it was a brilliant experience and one which I certainly will cherish for some time to come. It was great to work with you for a third time, and I certainly hope it won't be the last

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”
