  • Stunning boutique accommodation throughout
  • Explore remote Berber valleys & villages in the Atlas Mountains
  • Enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of Marrakech's atmospheric Medina
  • Relax in a superb boutique hotel in the Palmeraie

Morocco's High Atlas Mountains are a majestic range featuring North Africa's highest peak, Mount Toubkal. The valleys and passes in the region offer some fantastic trekking and the sleepy Berber villages en-route offer a fantastic insight into local culture. For this holiday, we have chosen a moderate overnight trek that takes you through one of our favourite valleys, the Azzadene valley. With superb views, you will walk for 5 - 6 hours each day, overnighting in comfort at the Azzaden trekking lodge which features underfloor heating, stunning views and ensuite rooms.

After the exertion of your trek, you will then transfer to a gorgeous boutique riad in the heart of Marrakech's old Medina. Marrakech is a city that you just can't help but fall in love with. Categorised as a Unesco World Heritage site, the focal point of the ancient medina is the world famous Djemma el Fna. The large square comes to life at night with food stalls, story tellers, snake charmers and acrobats. Away from the square, are the enticing souks, which consist of small winding roads full of colourful market stalls selling anything from slippers, to herbs and spices to ornaments. For the more culturally inclined, the ancient Bahia and Badi palaces offer an intriguing insight into how the imperial kings used to live.

After the bustle and heady atmosphere of the souks, finish your holiday in style and put your feet up and relax in sublime accommodation in Marrakech's palmeraie. The palmeraie is an oasis outside of Marrakech, where the countryside is dotted with hundreds of date palms. Over the years, many hotels have opened up, taking advantage of the year round sun and the proximity to Marrakech airport. After deep research, we have chosen les cinq Djellebas as our favourite. Romantic, serene and stylish, this is a destination for couples wanting to kick back and relax. Even better, you have complimentary transfers into Marrakech, so if you want to head back for more shopping, you can.

After breakfast, you will meet your guide and muleteer. Once you have loaded up your bags, the mule and cook set off together, taking a head-start to pick a perfect picnic spot and start cooking your lunch. Your walk starts with a fairly stiff climb up towards the pass at Tizi Oudite (2219m), which offers dramatic mountain views. From here, the trail descends down into the spectacular Azzadene valley, known locally as the valley of colour. Your day of walking ends in the small Berber village of Ait Aissa, home to the Kasbah Du Toubkal's Azzaden Trekking Lodge perched spectacularly upon a rise with stunning views up the valley.

Ait Aissa – Imlil - Marrakech
After breakfast you will set off walking through the Azzadene valley, passing traditional Berber mountain villages. The view ahead of you is of the peaks of the High Atlas, whilst the valley around offers beautiful scenery with a rushing mountain stream surrounded by lush walnut groves. If you’re feeling energetic, you can take a slight route detour to include the D’Irhoulidene waterfalls, this adds a couple of extra hours walking but is worth the effort. IT is a steep climb up to Tizi n Mzik before the final descent down to Imlil. From Imlil you will be transferred to your riad in the medina of Marrakech. Once you have settled into your riad, we suggest you set off and explore Marrakech's medina. In the evening, be sure to head down to the main square here food stalls, acrobats, snake charmers and story tellers congregate creating an unforgettable atmosphere.
Approx. 4-5 hours walking, 6-7 hours walking including the waterfalls.
Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch
Accommodation: Riad Tzara

Today we recommend seeing some of the main cultural sights of Marrakech, including the Medersa Ben Youssef, Palais el Badi and the Bahia Palace, interspersed with a leisurely lunch watching the storks nesting on the ramparts of the ancient city or perhaps some people watching at a cafe in the Spice market. In the evening, you might want to enjoy dinner in one of the restaurants over-looking the main square, or perhaps ask your host to book you a table at the atmospheric Foundouk restaurant, serving up delicious French & Moroccan fusion food.

When is best?

These trip is possible any time of year, and is the perfect solution for those travelling in the winter months. From November to April, the mountain-tops are covered in snow, but you will be walking below the snow line on this day trip from Marrakech, so this shouldn't cause any trouble. The bonus of course is that the mountains look stunning with snow atop the peaks.

The summer months can get very hot, but it is perfectly manageable. Spring and Autumn are arguably the best time of year, with wild flowers in spring and stunning vibrant red Walnut groves in late autumn.

Is it for me?

The Atlas Mountains Valleys treks are designed to be suitable for those who’d rather see more of the villages and valleys than tackle the high peaks. Because they avoid the higher altitude passes, they are also suitable all year round. The treks are suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and children are welcome (assuming they are used to walking).

  • Thanks for organising an excellent holiday for us. It's my first time using Tourdust and I've been really impressed and will certainly be recommending you to friends and family. You provided an excellent level of service all the way through, and the bespoke nature of the trip was fantastic whilst being really good value for money.
    Key highlights:
    - Le Kasbah de Toubkal blew us away - one not to miss!
    - The trek was amazing and my kids loved it. The camping was really fun, the food was excellent, and I'd particularly call out our guide Rashid who was fantastic show especially with my kids.
    - Riad Adore was outstanding - far exceeding my expectations - it was beautiful and we were very well looked after
    - Le Doux Tour was luxurious and a nice relaxing way to end the holiday.
    - Logistics were great and our main driver Mustapha was brilliant

If there was one build / thing I would change, it's a very small one but some candles / lanterns to use in the evening whilst camping would have made it easier to stay outside for a bit longer.

  • It was totally awesome!! Climbing the Toubkal summit by moonlight is just breathtaking!!! Yes it was absolutely freezing and so glad I took layers of thermals and hat and gloves!!

The Riads you booked were great, we both loved them, although we preferred the second Kasbah in Imlil we stayed in to the Kasbah Toubkal on our first night, our room was great especially after being in hostels for several nights!! Boy were they cold!!!!

El Fenn is fabulous, Lilly Allen had been staying with her band that week and left the day we arrived! Love that place, we are planning to go back next year! Caravanne was like walking into a little boutique hotel, loved that place as well.

There's something special about the mountains, loved it!

The desert camp was really well organised, although to be honest I think two nights are enough as there is not a lot to do and it is blisteringly hot by 9.00!! But we were looked after really well and had my first glass of wine for two weeks, went down very well!!! The sundowners were so much fun, especially trying to walk through the dunes after a couple of wines!!

Really great adventure and thank you so much for putting such a fab trip together for us!

  • We had a fantastic time and were very impressed with the smooth organisation throughout, so please pass my thanks on to the team and in particular to Ben who suggested and planned our stay. Waking up on the morning of my 30th in the mountains and hiking up to a waterfall in the snow was certainly the best memory which will stay with us for years!
We felt the riad in Marrakech was wonderful and were very looked after by the hosts. I think we should have perhaps tried to be a bit more organised with sightseeing as it is so hard to navigate the city and a lot of walking. In hindsight a guide would be good even though we never feel we need one being stubborn travellers.
The trek was impressive and Mohammed and Samir were good fun. It was challenging but the right level for us and we really felt it was a great achievement.
Lastly, we both really, really rated Domaine Malika which is hands down the best hotel we have stayed in (I used to stay in plenty of 5 * European and LHW hotels in a previous job? so that's a high praise for us).
We thought we'd been checked into the biggest room in the place and it was just the basic room. The staff were brilliant and the pool/food/décor all wonderful. Next time, we would head straight here, take a day taxi into Marrakech, and then a day or two trek away from the hotel as we loved it so much.
