Ole Sereni is a large, modern hotel conveniently situated about twenty minutes from both Wilson and Jomo Kenyatta Airports, southern Nairobi, Kenya. Functioning largely as an airport stopover, it offers the comforts and services of a city hotel while simultaneously bordering the wilds of the Nairobi National Park. The neighbouring waterhole provides opportunities, albeit limited, to see rhino, zebra, buffalo, and antelope.

Formerly the US embassy, the hotel may have a somewhat impersonal feel, but has retained its bustling atmosphere. Its layout is long and thin, with polished surfaces and floor-lighting illuminating a contemporary, if somewhat garish, décor. On the plus side, the hotel boasts an enormous range of facilities, including conference halls and meeting lounges, numerous bars and lively restaurants complete with entertainment shows, as well as a gym, spa and rooftop pool, perfect for relaxation after a long flight. The Big Five Restaurant and Eagle Steakhouse & Bar offer a tasty a la carte menu, and the neighbouring waterhole and national park can be seen from the terraces of both the Waterhole Sports Bar, and the Ngong Pool Bar. Realistic expectations are a must since wildlife sightings can be sparse.

Ole Sereni has 134 tastefully decorated rooms complete with wood-panelling and African-inspired features. All rooms have twin or double beds and are well-equipped with an extensive range of modern conveniences including air conditioning, satellite TV and Wi-Fi. The 58 'Superior Rooms' house a walk-in shower, whilst the 48 'Deluxe Rooms' contain combination shower/bathtubs. Even-numbered rooms face south overlooking the park, and the odd-numbers face north, with urban views of the city streets. Note that any guest requiring a quiet stay should request rooms far from the Waterhole Bar. The 26 'Club Rooms' are a little more spacious and boast private balconies, whilst the 2 'Suites' are the most luxurious, with four-poster bed, private lounge, and jacuzzi.

Although the majority of guests come here to seek rest rather than adventure, the travel desk can arrange a variety of wildlife recreations, including tours of Nairobi National Park, visits to an elephant orphanage or giraffe centre, as well as longer trips to Nakuru, Amboseli, and Aberdare National Parks.

What Ole Sereni may lack in charm it makes up for with convenience, allowing guests to avoid the choked Nairobi traffic when making an airport transfer from an international flight to a safari destination. The hotel will suit any traveller seeking a lively atmosphere and excellent facilities for some quick-fix relaxation en route elsewhere.

  • We had the most incredible time thank you. We loved Karen Blixen camp and felt part of a family there, it was incredibly special. And Breezes was very relaxing.
We can't fault all the transfers and the moment we were greeted on the tarmac at Nairobi airport we knew we were going to be well cared for.

Thank you so much to you and all the Tourdust team for making it such a happy and memorable trip.

  • We had an amazing trip. Everything was well thought out and so much fun. What a great way to truly see the country and learn the culture.

Joseph was the perfect guide. Very kind, professional, knowledgeable and patient. The kids loved Joseph and keep asking when will they meet him again. He found the Big 5 for us which was unforgettable! Please pass along our appreciation to Joseph.

Maji Moto was also another incredible experience. They had great customer service and we loved experiencing their culture.

Sunbird was absolutely beautiful and I wish we had more time there. We loved the view of the lake!

One suggestion to make the trip even better for other guests in the future would be to have a cooler with drinks and snacks in the Jeep at all times because a ton of driving is involved and it would be helpful to have a cold drink and snacks during the long trip.

Thanks again for organizing this experience of a lifetime for us!

  • I had just the most incredible time on the climb.

The team were incredible and just so accommodating. I really only have good things to say as it was such a great experience.

George was as good as a guide as it gets, very articulate and made sure I was comfortable the whole way up with frequent briefings.
