Overview

Located in the leafy suburbs of Nairobi’s Karen district, Macushla House is an intimate and charming home-away-from-home. With lush gardens and a lovely pool, this owner-run guesthouse provides affordable accommodation without compromising on the high quality of service and cuisine. Though 18km from downtown Nairobi, and 30km from the international airport, Macushla is well positioned for visits to popular Nairobi attractions such as the Karen Blixen museum and the Giraffe House.

With just 6 rooms and a relaxed, informal atmosphere, Macushla has the feel of a private house. The décor is eclectic yet stylish, with colourful fabrics and high wood-panelled ceilings. There are two lounges - one featuring African-themed furniture, books, and board games, while the second has a log fire and bar. There’s also a small indoor dining room, and plenty of comfortable outdoor seating under a covered stone veranda which looks out onto the good-sized pool and delightful gardens where monkeys play.

All 6 bedrooms differ in size, although each one is spacious and comfortable, with high-wooden ceilings and a four-poster double bed draped in mosquito netting. All rooms boasts individual, quirky décor, and have a bright and clean ensuite bathroom with over-bath shower facilities.

Though primarily chosen as a place to relax and recharge between flights or safari activities, the hotel is well located for visits to popular Nairobi attractions such as Giraffe House, Daphne Sheldrick's Elephant Orphanage, the Karen Blixen Museum, and the Nairobi National Park.

Children of all ages are welcome, and while there are no child-specific activities, flexible meal times and babysitting services make Machusla a great choice for families. Parents should note that the pool is unfenced, so adult supervision is required at all times.

  • We had the most incredible time thank you. We loved Karen Blixen camp and felt part of a family there, it was incredibly special. And Breezes was very relaxing.
We can't fault all the transfers and the moment we were greeted on the tarmac at Nairobi airport we knew we were going to be well cared for.

Thank you so much to you and all the Tourdust team for making it such a happy and memorable trip.

  • We had an amazing trip. Everything was well thought out and so much fun. What a great way to truly see the country and learn the culture.

Joseph was the perfect guide. Very kind, professional, knowledgeable and patient. The kids loved Joseph and keep asking when will they meet him again. He found the Big 5 for us which was unforgettable! Please pass along our appreciation to Joseph.

Maji Moto was also another incredible experience. They had great customer service and we loved experiencing their culture.

Sunbird was absolutely beautiful and I wish we had more time there. We loved the view of the lake!

One suggestion to make the trip even better for other guests in the future would be to have a cooler with drinks and snacks in the Jeep at all times because a ton of driving is involved and it would be helpful to have a cold drink and snacks during the long trip.

Thanks again for organizing this experience of a lifetime for us!

  • I had just the most incredible time on the climb.

The team were incredible and just so accommodating. I really only have good things to say as it was such a great experience.

George was as good as a guide as it gets, very articulate and made sure I was comfortable the whole way up with frequent briefings.
