Lairds Lodge is an upmarket country hotel tranquilly located in the picturesque Garden Route area of South Africa’s Western Cape. Ideally positioned between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, this privately run colonial retreat boasts friendly, personalised service in a stunning location. The lodge offers 17 ensuite bedrooms, a lovely outdoor pool and 24 acres of landscaped gardens and verdant woodland, with beautiful views of the distant mountains.

The lodge’s communal spaces comprise a main lounge, elegantly decorated with antique furniture, plush sofas and a wood burning fire, and the ‘Brandy lounge’, a popular venue for pre-dinner drinks, which has a separate TV area. There is also a small library. Breakfasts and afternoon teas are served outside on one of the sunny terraces, and guests enjoy four course dinners either alfresco or in the traditional dining room, with a menu specialising in game and seafood. Outdoors is a pleasant pool with loungers, surrounded by extensive landscaped gardens.

Various activities are available locally. A few minutes’ drive east of the lodge, Plettenberg Bay offers numerous eateries, markets, and coffee shops. Visitors can embark on boat trips for whale and dolphin watching, and visit the pristine sands and scenic walking trails of Robberg Nature Reserve, home to an impressive seal colony. A short drive west is Knysna, famed for its oysters and a must for foodies. Boat excursions are available across beautiful Knysna Lagoon to the wonderful beaches at Bollard Bay and Brenton on Sea. Wine buffs are spoilt for choice in this area, with tastings and lunches on offer at award winning wine estates, whilst animal lovers can encounter baby elephants at Knysna Elephant Park.

Accommodation at the lodge comprises 17 tastefully decorated bedrooms, all with air conditioning, TV and Wi-Fi. Each room has an ensuite bathroom and a private veranda with lovely garden views. Rooms range from standard double rooms, to more generous deluxe rooms with king or twin beds, whilst seven luxury rooms are the largest in size.

Children are extremely welcome at the lodge, and a babysitting service can be arranged.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
