Overview

A 12 tent camp situated on a dry riverbed in the Timbavati Game Reserve. Each of the beautifully decorated tents has been sympathetically situated to ensure privacy and a genuine bush experience. This is not accommodation for the faint-hearted, the camp is unfenced and game can wander through. Each tent has been thoughtfully furnished, with comfortable beds and a generous sun deck with views of the river bed. The bathrooms have luxurious baths and an out-door shower, which, again has views (but is entirely private).

The camp has a decent sized swimming pool with views of a watering hole and plenty of sun loungers to go round. The communal areas around the lodge are just so, with plenty of sofas and comfortable chairs, again making the most of the views.

The food served here by resident chef, Ryan, who prepares arguably the best food that we have tasted out on safari. Great thought is put into the meals that are served and the kids meals are also a cut above the other standard options sold. Dinners and lunches are served at the lodge, whilst breakfast is served out in the bush, alongside the river bed.

As with all of the safari lodges, the schedule of the day is 2 game drives; one at dawn and one at dusk, with plenty of time to relax in-between. With over 53,000 hectares of bush, Timbavati is one of the larger private game reserves in the Greater Kruger area. Unfenced to Kruger, there is an abundance of wildlife, with excellent chances of sighting the big five. Your guided game drives will last around 3 hours and you will stop for refreshments breaks along the way.The morning game drive ends at the bush breakfast site, after which you can either hop back into your game drive vehicle, or you can walk back along the river bed.

Families with children aged 8 and over are welcome at the camp. There is a larger tent that can fit extra beds in, but families will all be in a room together, unless they opt for separate tents. Tanda Tula does not bill itself as a family friendly safari camp, which does not mean that children are not welcome, but you won't find children's programmes and activities. The layout of the camp and openness to the bush means that children need to be well-behaved and sensible. That said, this is the closest to bush camping that families with under 16's are going to get in the Kruger area (most camps don't accept under 12's) and it offers a fantastic experience and level of service.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
