Overview

Ulusaba Rock Lodge is an upmarket property situated in Sabi Sands private game reserve adjacent to the Kruger National Park in north eastern South Africa. This exclusive lodge perches high on a rocky hillside with wonderful panoramic views of the surrounding bushland. Rock Lodge offers excellent service and deluxe accommodation in just ten rooms and suites, along with a heated swimming pool, a spa, gym, wine cellar, and tennis courts. The property sits within the private 13,500-hectare Ulusaba Reserve, home to the big 5 (elephant, lion, rhino, Cape buffalo and leopard) plus hippo, giraffe, zebra, cheetah, jackal and abundant birdlife. It will appeal to travellers on a higher budget seeking an exclusive and stylish safari experience.

Guest areas include an elegant, open-sided communal dining room with a high thatched ceiling hung with chandeliers, and an alfresco dining deck with individual tables boasting sweeping views of the bushveld. Private dining, including romantic bush dinners, can be arranged. The lodge has a wine cellar and holds regular tastings. There is a well-equipped gym onsite, and a spa offering massages and beauty treatments. Outside are two floodlit tennis courts and a refreshing outdoor pool which is heated during the cooler May to September months.

Activities comprise twice-daily game drives and morning guided walks led by highly experienced guides. Community visits to local villages and schools are a great opportunity to meet residents and learn about day to day life. Excursions further afield include visits to the stunning Drakensberg escarpment, renowned for its dramatic terrain. Back at the lodge enjoy a spa treatment, relax in the pool, or learn about the stars in a fascinating Astronomy evening at the lodge’s bush observatory.

The accommodation comprises ten bespoke rooms and suites, all stylishly decorated with a blend of contemporary and traditional features. All rooms and suites have king size or twin beds draped with mosquito nets, spacious contemporary bathrooms, and all come with a complimentary minibar, hot drink facilities, air conditioning, ceiling fans, and Wi-Fi. Outside is a private terrace or balcony with wonderful views. Suites offer one or two bedrooms and extended living space, several featuring a split-level layout, and some boast private plunge pools and indulgent outdoor showers.

Children of all ages are extremely welcome at Ulusaba Rock Lodge. Guests under six years of age stay free of charge, and there are reductions for under 12s when sharing a room with adults. The lodge’s two bedroomed suite is ideal for families, with one twin and one double room, two ensuite bathrooms and a spacious lounge. Two further suites each offer one bedroom with a king size bed, and a separate lounge area with a day bed suitable for children. Extra beds may be provided, subject to advance request. The lodge operates a kids’ club for under 12s with activities including treasure hunts, arts and crafts, cookery, board games, kids’ spa treatments, supervised pool fun, storytelling and safari walks. Complimentary babysitting is available on request and, due to the rural location of the lodge, parents are reminded to keep their children under constant adult supervision.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
