Taylor’s Hill is a bright and contemporary boutique hotel set in a traditional tea planters’ house dating back over a century. It’s named after James Taylor, who was once responsible for developing commercial tea production in the Ceylon area. Sumptuous and stylish throughout, its quiet hillside setting boasts scenic views of the lush surroundings.
The five rooms at this small and charming property admit plenty of natural light and are decidedly modern in appearance. Each room is individually styled with unique customised wallpaper and a fine selection of both contemporary and antique furniture. All quarters offer generous amounts of space, picturesque views of the gardens and/or surrounding forest, and an ensuite bathroom with drench shower. Some of the rooms have a bathtub.
The hotel is a great base for exploring both the surrounding countryside and the city of Kandy itself. Regarded by many as Sri Lanka’s capital of culture, Kandy has an abundance of things to see and do. It’s a decidedly historic city that showcases rich heritage and traditions. Set on a plateau amidst towering mountains, the city benefits from being located in one of the more naturally picturesque parts of the country. Some of the city’s key attractions include the ornate Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the expansive Royal Botanic Gardens and the extravagant Royal Palace of Kandy.
There’s plenty to do back at the hotel. The grounds feature beautifully landscaped gardens and there are numerous walking trails for anyone wishing to get up-close to the natural surroundings. Some of the many amenities include an outdoor infinity pool and a tennis court, with badminton and croquet also available. Dining experiences are a key part of any stay at Taylor’s Hill. Naturally, most of the cuisine served here is Sri Lankan, with chefs cooking up a range of appetizing local and national specialties; Asian food is also on offer, as is the occasional British dish in keeping with the hotel’s colonial history.
Taylor’s Hill is very child friendly indeed, with families more than welcome to come and stay. There’s a play room just for kids, as well as a TV room and a billiards room. Extra beds can be provided on demand and a complimentary babysitting service can be arranged with prior notice. The Pattiyagama Suite is an ideal choice for families since it sleeps up to 4 by way of a main double room which connects to a twin. Parents should note that children should be kept under adult supervision at all times.
We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!
The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.
I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.
The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.
All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).
From my seven-year-old son:
I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.
In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

We just wanted to thank you for an absolutely amazing holiday. Everything went exactly to plan and we were blown away with the quality of the guides, transport and accommodation. The itinerary was perfect for our family with a great mix of guided and free days and the different destinations complemented each other well. We will definitely be using Tourdust again for our next trip! Particular highlights were the Ha Long Bay cruise, Hanoi, and the morning cycle tour in Siam Reap
