Overview

Hog Hollow is a high quality eco lodge in a beautiful and convenient forest setting in The Crags area outside Plettenberg Bay.

We aren’t going to win any prizes for originality for recommending Hogs Hollow, but in this case the big reputation is well deserved, it is hard to see how anyone could go away disappointed from a stay here. There are 16 suites in total set within forested grounds and centred around the central lodge area which plays host to a fantastic restaurant and stunning terrace with large fire pits and cracking mountain and forest views. Breakfasts are vast and enjoyed on the terrace, whilst evening meals are shared communally in the lodge, which is good news or bad news, depending on your viewpoint.

The rooms strike just the right balance between comfort, homeliness and character. We are big fans of the traditional verandas complete with hammock and the wood burning stoves inside. All rooms are, of course, ensuite (with separate bath and shower) and spacious and situated with a degree of privacy. 13 of the rooms are forest or garden lodges with king size bed (twin on request), lounge area and private balcony / veranda. The other 3 rooms are larger family loft suites Loft Suites spread over 2 floors. Upstairs the main bedroom has a king-size (or twin) with ensuite bathroom and downstairs has a double sleeper couch and ottoman which can sleep up to two children (under 12), sleeping up to a family of four in total. As with all rooms, there is a private veranda with hammock.

Hog Hollow is very well managed and whilst a solid dose of professionalism runs through the service team, it is all incredibly friendly and personable. Facilities include a 15 metre long blue pool, sauna, massage/pedicure/manicure, highly recommended horse rides through woodcutter’s paths and fields and forest walks from the Lodge. The location in the Crags makes a great base to explore the Garden Route, close to home are a number of the most significant attractions in the region; Monkeyland, Storms River Canopy Tours, Tsitsikamma, Plettenberg Bay & Nature’s Valley (beach). Further afield, Knysna and Wilderness NP are easy day trips.

For Families:

Hog Hollow goes to great lengths to be welcoming to families. Children of all ages are welcome and the family loft suites (sleeping up to 4) and the villa (sleeping up to 6) offer a good range of family room options. Hog Hollow also boasts one of the healthiest children’s menus we have seen in South Africa (a good thing), toys & bed-time stories placed in the rooms and board games up in the main lodge. The group dinners in the main restaurant will be a concern to any parent with poor eaters, but families are usually served at an earlier sitting, and you can always choose to eat separately.

If you want more privacy and space and have a larger family, then the villa is a fantastic option. Sleeping up to a family of 6, the master bedroom downstairs is a retreat for mum and dad, while the two rooms upstairs adjoin the games room (complete with a pool table and table tennis & family board games) providing an excellent space for the children. There is a swimming pool, barbeque facilities and a central eating area, all in all creating a private holiday haven

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair

  • Can't praise tour dust enough, they helped us to create a holiday of a lifetime that has given us family memories we will treasure forever. From start to finish the whole experience was exactly what we wanted and more. Due to covid we waited 2 and a half years for this trip but worth the wait.
