Overview

The Tuscan-style Bougainvillea Retreat is a luxurious and secluded hotel surrounded by unspoiled countryside in the heart of Sri Lanka’s ‘Cultural Triangle’. It offers respite from the hustle and bustle of Kandy, as well as stunning panoramic views of the Victoria Reservoir and Knuckles Mountain Range. Golfers will be pleased to learn the retreat is actually situated within the grounds of the elegant Victoria Golf & Country Resort, whose course has been ranked amongst the world’s top 100 by Golf Digest.

There are eight guest rooms at Bougainvillea Retreat, as well as the larger Master Suite. Three of the guest rooms are located in the Main House, whereas the other five are set in cottages in the hotel’s tropical gardens. All of them are pleasantly decorated and handsomely furnished, with picturesque views of the garden and the unspoiled countryside. Facilities common to all the rooms include air conditioning and a built-in wardrobe, as well as hot water provided by solar heating, Wi-Fi and an en-suite bathroom with a hot water shower.

Guests staying here can make use of the infinity pool, as well as the Stone Garden, an open-air spa complete with steam bath and jacuzzi. The hotel’s spa therapist offers a range of indulgent treatments, from a deep tissue massage and reflex zone therapy, to coconut body scrubs and the Bougainvillea signature massage. There’s also a small cinema with over 1,000 DVDs to choose from, along with a well-stocked library and a billiards table.

All food served at Bougainvillea Retreat is freshly prepared and locally sourced ingredients are used whenever possible. The menus vary quite a lot depending on what food’s in season. A lot of the fruits and vegetables served are actually grown on-site. Guests can sample a range of specialty Sri Lankan dishes, as well as some international ones. The hotel even has a specially built wood-fired pizza oven, with pizzas available on request; the chefs will also bake cakes and ice-creams for guests to enjoy.

The villa welcomes children of all ages. Because there are quite a few steep staircases, parents should make sure to keep a close eye on their children. If given advance notice, the hotel can provide single beds and cots for younger ones. One of the garden cottages has two adjoining bedrooms, so it’s a good choice for families, especially since the two bedrooms each open out to a private veranda.

Guests will surely want to relax at the hotel and explore the golf course, but there’s also plenty to see in the city of Kandy. It’s about 45 minutes from the hotel and is known for its many Buddhist temples and other sites of religious and cultural importance. Closer to home, the Knuckles Mountain Range and the Victoria Reservoir, created by the largest dam in Sri Lanka, are definitely worth visiting.

  • Thank you yet again for another meticulously organised and executed holiday (our 5th with you). Every aspect worked perfectly.
Please could you pass on our sincere thanks to your agent in Sri Lanka; Lakshita, our driver and guide, absolutely made the trip for us - he was so keen for us to have the best experience possible. He was organised, kind, interested, punctual, the car was always spotless, and he was an excellent driver. His extensive knowledge was really appreciated by us and was exactly what we had hoped for in a guide. I think the highlight for us was our day in Anuradhapura (7 hours of absorbing history and culture), but there was so much to learn and absorb every day. He also made several suggestions for things that he thought we might like that weren't in our itinerary, and then booked them for us. These included an ayurvedic massage after climbing Sigiriya, a cultural show (an hour of touristy fun!), reef snorkelling with turtles (a real highlight for me - I wish we could have stayed all day), a lagoon boat trip and visit to a cinnamon island, a turtle sanctuary visit, and a gemstone factory visit. He also managed to get us a private tour of Lunanguga, which Peter thoroughly enjoyed. We also really enjoyed the tea factory tour.
Our guide for the hike was also really excellent, and he and Lakshita made sure that our day was perfectly tailored to our (my) ability.
All our accommodation was also perfectly selected. Our favourite was the Ceylon tea trails bungalow (just perfect!), but The Villa Bentota came a close second as a perfect way to relax at the end of the trip. Our villa and the grounds at Uga at Ulagalla were also beautiful.
(Our only slightly disappointing day was the whale watching - no whales wanted to be seen on that particular day, plus I was very sea-sick despite taking meds! The tour organisers offered us a repeat day the following day, which we declined! Having said that, being out on the water was still enjoyable, up to a point...).
I'm sure I've missed out something - we basically loved it all and felt that the balance of the itinerary was perfect for us (we used the 'rest' day in Galle to do the snorkelling, lagoon, and turtles)
    Thank you very, very much.

  • We just wanted to thank you for an absolutely amazing holiday. Everything went exactly to plan and we were blown away with the quality of the guides, transport and accommodation. The itinerary was perfect for our family with a great mix of guided and free days and the different destinations complemented each other well. We will definitely be using Tourdust again for our next trip! Particular highlights were the Ha Long Bay cruise, Hanoi, and the morning cycle tour in Siam Reap
