Overview

Southern Sun Ridgeway is a substantial four star hotel in Zambia’s capital Lusaka, offering friendly service, well-appointed accommodation, and facilities including a swimming pool and gym, all set within tranquil landscaped gardens. Located in an upmarket suburb just 3km from the city centre, and 27km from Lusaka Airport, the hotel is ideal for a short stay at the start or finish of a safari holiday.

The hotel’s airy lobby, bar and restaurant are located around a pretty pool which is home to several resident baby crocodiles. The Musuku restaurant offers continental-inspired cuisine, served both indoors and alfresco on the terrace. Guests can opt to dine in their rooms, and 24 hour room service is available. Facilities include a fitness suite and a gift shop, whilst outside in the beautifully landscaped grounds is a generous swimming pool with loungers.

The hotel is well located for the popular Arcades shopping mall, and the bustling Cairo Road area which is lined with all manner of shops and bazaars, including Lumumba, Lusaka’s largest street market. Beautiful ceramics can be found at the Moore Pottery Factory on the Kabelenga Road. In contrast, guests can take an excursion to Lusaka National Park just 15 km outside the city. Opened in 2015, the park is home to the endangered white rhino, along with giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest. It’s also worth taking a day-trip to the Lilayi Elephant Nursery on the outskirts of the city, to visit the rescued and rehabilitated orphaned elephants from Kafue National Park.

The hotel has 155 ensuite standard and executive rooms with garden views, each comprising a double or two single beds. All rooms have an ensuite bathroom with washbasin, WC, and either bath or walk-in-shower. Air conditioning, Wi-Fi, satellite TVs, and minibars are available throughout, and wheelchair-accessible rooms are available on request.

Children are extremely welcome. Under 18s are accommodated free of charge, with free breakfast included. Cots and highchairs are available on request, and a baby sitting service is also available.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We had an amazing experience - absolutely loved it.
Mohamed and Said were great and very patient especially with me going downhill - was quite nervous about the scree slopes and paths.

Will be a trip we remember forever
