Arugam Bay is a small, laid-back surf and beach town, situated on the south east coast of Sri Lanka. ‘A-Bay’, as it’s affectionately referred to, has long been a mecca for surfers and is ranked as one of the world’s top ten surfing destinations. The surfing season here runs roughly from mid-May to August. There are a number of surfing beaches, offering conditions suitable for all levels, including beginner. Surfing lessons and equipment hire are both available locally.
The resort consists of a picturesque curve of sandy beach, backed by a main strip dotted with guesthouses, internet cafés, shops, and restaurants with ocean views. There is a limited range of accommodation available, with most at the lower mid range, but there are a couple of gems, the best of which is The Hideaway. Arugam Bay is a great choice if you love surfing or want to give it a go, but if the surf doesn't appeal, then it holds less appeal. The region typically enjoys excellent sunny weather from April to September, with its monsoon season settling in from October to January, and tailing off during February and March.
