Overview

Mala Mala Main camp is the largest of three related camps in the Mala Mala private game reserve, in Sabi Sands, Kruger. Something of an institution, the main camp is one of the oldest safari destinations and can offer some of the best game in a historical setting.

The camp offers impressive communal facilities including a large lounge with a viewing deck across the bush, a dining room, the ‘Monkey Club’ library and an infinity pool with beautiful views across the river. Many of these areas are as they originally were when the camp was founded in 1962 and are therefore very traditional in style. The unfenced reserve has the benefit of game moving freely across from Kruger National Park, and therefore this is one of the best locations for ‘Big Five’ viewing. Each day offers a morning and evening game drive led by highly knowledgeable and educated rangers; with traversing rights over the whole reserve the Big Five are often all spotted in one day.

The exclusive accommodation at Main camp is limited to 10 suites providing 9 luxury rooms. Each en-suite room is large and traditionally furnished featuring ‘his and hers’ bathrooms, outdoor showers and including all expected amenities. Private decks overlooking the wilderness provide game viewing from the comfort of your own room. Family rooms are also available for two adults and two children or alternatively three adults. The rooms are spacious and comfortable but relatively basic; the focus is clearly on the excellent game opportunities to maintain the camp’s popularity.

Mala Mala is open to children of all ages; however the minimum age for game drives is 4 unless the vehicle is booked for sole use. This is a younger age than many nearby camps and with a babysitting service available, this is a unique opportunity for young families to experience a real safari together.

Whilst Mala Mala Main camp is no longer the height of luxury, the exceptional location and quality of game makes this a unique place, still producing some of the best safaris.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
