Overview

Botlierskop Private Game Reserve is a family run establishment located in the picturesque Garden Route area of South Africa’s Western Cape. This extensive property stands midway between Mossel Bay and George, with the imposing Outeniqua Mountains providing a spectacular backdrop. The vast 4,000-hectare reserve is home to abundant wildlife including lion, elephant, giraffe, buffalo, rhino, and the rare black impala, along with over 200 species of birds. A range of stylish accommodation options are offered, along with two restaurants, two swimming pools, a spa and tennis courts.

The main lodge nestles on a hillside with panoramic views of the Moordkuil River and surrounding bush. Communal areas include an expansive open plan lounge and ‘Fireplace’ restaurant. Outside is a substantial wooden deck where barbeques, and drum and dance performances take place. A second restaurant, the Bellevue serves lunch and dinner with an a la carte menu and regular buffets and barbeques. The lodge has a lovely heated infinity pool overlooking the valley below, whilst a second unheated pool at the manor house has lovely views of the surrounding plains, a great spot for glimpsing the resident wildlife. There is a floodlit tennis court on site, and a tranquil riverside spa. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in the main lodge, although note there is no reception in private guest suites.

Activities include game drives in the extensive reserve, guided walks, fishing, canoeing, and tennis. Evening and private game drives can be arranged, subject to additional cost. Horseback safaris are available for all riding levels, (a minimum age of 6 years applies) whilst more experienced riders can enjoy exhilarating horseback game viewing rides.

The reserve offers several accommodation options. 21 elegant tented suites enjoy a lovely riverside location, shaded by trees and connected to the main lodge by elevated timber walkways. Each colonial style suite comprises a four-poster bed draped with a mosquito net, a comfortable lounge area and a contemporary bathroom with a freestanding bathtub and indulgent outdoor shower. All suites have air conditioning and heating, a telephone, minibar, and hot drink facilities. Outside is a private decked terrace with lovely views of the river and mountains. Several units boast a private splash pool.

A short walk from the main lodge, the original Manor House offers seven ensuite rooms, each with double or twin beds draped with mosquito nets, a cosy lounge area, and a bathroom with shower, or with both bath and shower. Outside is a pleasant patio area with seating.

Located on the northern side of the reserve, Kleinvlei Village Lodge comprises seven properties, some dating back to the 1800s. These 2, 3, and 4-bedroom houses offer traditional, country-style bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, and are great for families or groups. Outside is a tranquil patio with garden or valley views.

Last but not least, there are eight self-catering Bush Villas located in a peaceful spot 27km from the main lodge, close to a waterhole popular with hippo and buffalo. Each villa has an open plan kitchen, dining, and lounge area, and three ensuite bedrooms. Several come with a private splash pool.

Families are extremely welcome at Botlierskop. The tented suites and manor house rooms can accommodate guests over six years of age on sofa beds in the lounge areas, whilst the self-catering bush villas and the Kleinvlei Village houses are suitable for children of all ages. There is a children’s playground on site, and the two swimming pools will appeal to guests of all ages. A kids’ activity programme includes guided nature walks, catch and release fishing, face painting, pony rides, and kids’ spa treatments.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
