Overview

Stonecutters Lodge is a secluded hillside retreat in the stunning Mpumalanga Highlands region of north eastern South Africa. Nestled within a 63-hectare estate between the settlements of Dullstroom and Lydenberg, this rural property offers relaxation and tranquillity in a beautiful location. With accommodation ranging from romantic studio cottages to a three-bedroom house, the lodge offers self-catering options and activities including hiking, fly-fishing, and spa treatments. Stonecutters will appeal to travellers seeking space, privacy, and panoramic views, well off the beaten track.

The main manor house has a communal lounge and bar, and a restaurant serving generous buffet breakfasts and romantic candle-lit three course evening meals. There is a tranquil terrace overlooking lily ponds for alfresco dining on summer days. For private dining, indulgent breakfast baskets and gourmet barbeque baskets can be delivered to your accommodation upon request.

Activities include exploring the expansive estate and its numerous hiking trails or fly-fishing at one of two well-stocked trout dams or by the river which winds through the estate. A visit to the charming village of nearby Dullstroom, which boasts whiskey tasting sessions and craft beer, along with numerous restaurants is a must. Back at Stonecutters, indulge in a beauty treatment or massage, or just kick back and enjoy the breath-taking views.

There are several accommodation options. The Cobbles Studios comprise six self-catering units each accommodating two guests in king beds with ensuite bathrooms, with alfresco private decks equipped with gas barbeques. In contrast, Stone Cottage is ideal for families or groups, and comprises a master bedroom with ensuite bathroom, a second bathroom, and a spacious lounge area which can accommodate up to three children. The property has airy vaulted ceilings, an open fire and a well-equipped kitchen. Outside, there are two private patios boasting superb views of the surrounding countryside and a barbeque. The largest property is Trout House, an attractive two-floor stone unit which sleeps up to seven guests in three bedrooms, all with ensuite bathrooms. This house has a smart kitchen area, and an airy open-plan lounge with a fireplace. Outdoors there’s a thatched ‘boma’ with a barbeque for outdoor dining and lovely views across the estates’ trout dams.

Children of all ages are welcome, and the wide-open spaces of the estate are there to be explored and enjoyed by all age groups. Stone Cottage and Trout House are both great options for families, although given the property's remote location and nearby waterways, parents are reminded to keep their children under constant supervision.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
