Overview

Camp Figtree is a small boutique lodge in a stunning remote location set high in the Zuurberg Mountain Range, yet only a short drive from the main entrance to Addo Elephant National Park.

If there were a contest for best stoep (verandah) in Africa, it would be hard to imagine anywhere besting the colonial elegance, mountain views and utterly remote location of Camp Figtree’s magnificent terrace. This small lodge is set atop a high Zuurberg peak with 270 degree views, yet is only a short drive from the main entrance to Addo Elephant National Park, which is home to over 500 elephants, 450 Cape buffalo, lions, spotted hyena, black rhino and the fascinating flightless dung beetle.

The lodge has been designed around the original 1920's farmhouse and renovated sensitively with traditional corrugated iron roofs and the aforementioned stoep. There are four superior suites, three newer luxury suites and family cottage. Each suite is uniquely decorated with an elegant colonial feel. The infinity pool is set on the edge of a cliff with the terrain dropping away to the valley below.

The main reason for being here is for the wildlife of Addo. Camp Figtree have their own guides and open sided 4WDs and offer guests daily morning game drives usually lasting around 3 hours (extra cost). You can also visit Addo in your own vehicle, but to get the most out of the experience, it really is worth paying extra to have the specialist guide and open 4WD. It is well worth also taking the time to explore the environs of the lodge, enjoying the walking trails or enjoying a bush picnic safari style.

What you get with Camp Figtree is a very real sense of wilderness and an authentic safari ambience at superb value compared to other safari lodges in the Eastern Cape and Addo area. It is important to understand though that game drives do take part in the National Park, which can get very busy with visitors and vehicles – especially when compared to private reserves such as Amakhala or Shamwari. Please note that there is also no electricity overnight and access is via a steep gravel road (it is an adventure getting there, but we had no problem in our small standard hire car).

For Families: Camp Figtree welcomes children and there are no age restrictions. This is a peaceful grown-up setting, so isn’t the kind of place to let the kids run wild, but with well-spaced suites and plenty of outdoor space this isn’t usually a problem. Standard suites can accommodate rollaway beds, there is one superior suite with a separate single room to accommodate families of 3 or 4 (with younger children) and for larger families, there is a family suite which has a double master bedroom, 2 bunkrooms, its own pool and gardens. Dinner can be taken on your own verandah if preferred and babysitting can be arranged given enough warning.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
