Overview

Villa Maydou is tucked away in a delightful tropical garden within the historic city of Luang Prabang. It’s a charming hotel that combines history and heritage with modern convenience. Set in beautifully manicured grounds, it’s designed to resemble a traditional Lao village and has a peaceful, serene feel despite its location within walking distance of many of the city’s top attractions.

The hotel’s accommodation is spread across five guest houses: two of these are referred to as ‘heritage’ houses and are part of a UNESCO programme aimed at preserving the city’s heritage architecture; the remaining three, the ‘tradition’ houses, are newer builds. The guest rooms across both types of house showcase rich local Lao design and architecture. There are 29 guest rooms in total: 15 of these are in the ‘heritage’ houses, and 14 in the ‘tradition’ houses. All rooms are beautifully presented and feature lots of local touches, such as traditional embroidery and paintings, as well locally sourced silks, cottons and wood furnishings. All rooms have air conditioning, complimentary toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, a minibar and a flat-screen TV.

The restaurant serves a broad range of traditional Lao cuisine, along with a selection of Asian and French dishes. There’s also an impressive collection of wines to complement evening meals. For lighter snacks, cocktails and juices, there’s the bar, which is located right beside the salt water pool and is open throughout the day and into the evening. The hotel also has a massage house where numerous relaxing massages are offered, and a boutique selling a selection of traditional items such as silks, paintings and cosmetic products.

While staying here, guests have complimentary use of bicycles to help them explore Luang Prabang. The hotel is located close to the Nam Khan River and has numerous attractions close by. Some of these include the Buddhist temples of Vat Visounnarath and Wat Aham, the impressively ornate National Museum and the lively night market, where all sorts of wares are peddled. In the wider area there are lots of nature-based attractions worth visiting, such as the three-tiered Kuang Si Falls and the Pak Ou Caves, which are filled with thousands of Buddha statues.

The hotel does welcome children of all ages and offers a babysitting service, though arrangements have to be made in advance. While there’s plenty for families to do in Luang Prabang and the surrounding area, parents should note that there are no designated child activities.

  • I was also just about to email you to thank you and the team for arranging yet again, another wonderful experience.

Mount Kenya was spectacular and wild - I think I prefer it to Kili in many ways. The entire support team was professional, friendly and all round fantastic in making sure that we were safe, well fed and well looked after. In particular, we would commend Peter the guide as well as Paul one of the porters who doubled-up as his deputy on summit day. Our route was often shrouded in mist and rain that rapidly gathered in the valleys and moorlands, and we were very impressed at how Peter managed to navigate us safely through all of that notwithstanding. In addition, we loved learning about the history of Mount Kenya from him in the evenings. And ofcourse, I was blown away by the lovely birthday surprise at the end complete with balloons and a delicious cake that had journeyed with us from day 1. One thing we might recommend because of the sudden change in weather (it would sometimes get extremely cold and wet) is for the equipment list to be a little bit more detailed in terms of its recommendations e.g. layers to be moisture-wicking, walking boots be waterproof, doubling up on socks to avoid blisters etc.

El Karama is a beautiful conservancy and the lodge a true labour of love. Great hospitality in a relaxed environment. Delicious, fresh food. We enjoyed the drives, even if we didn't see much wildlife as the heavens opened on us for the last two outings. However, since it was very much geared towards families, I am not sure if I would stay again without kids. That said, I think it was perfect for a 3d/2n stay post mountain, and a much better choice than flying to the masai mara given the limited time we had.

Our transits were smooth. Samuel the driver was always on time, drove safely and kept the vehicle clean.

So it was a brilliant experience and one which I certainly will cherish for some time to come. It was great to work with you for a third time, and I certainly hope it won't be the last

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”
