Overview

Amakhosi Lodge is a remote, well-presented and moderately-priced safari base located right on the banks of the Mkuze River in the Amakhosi Private Game reserve in northern South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province. There is plenty of wildlife to be spotted amidst wonderfully scenic surroundings and the lodge draws its design inspiration from the rich Zulu culture.

One of the main draws of the lodge is that the accommodation is limited to a maximum of twenty guests at any one time. There are three accommodation options to choose from: six River Suites, two Honeymoon Suites and the Private House. The River Suites have lovely views, floor-to-ceiling windows and private viewing decks, while the Honeymoon Suites are more intimate and cosy. The Private House is a spacious two-bedroom villa that comes with its own splash pool and has an open-plan design; it’s set a short distance away from the main lodge area. All rooms have air conditioning, spacious outdoor deck areas and amenities such as tea and coffee making facilities, bathrobes and a minibar.

The reserve is home to abundant, diverse wildlife. Game drives are an integral part of the lodge experience and are led by expert guides keen to share their knowledge about the area and the animals that call it home. While out on drives, guests will enjoy close-up encounters and may even be lucky enough to spot all of the Big Five. Guided bush walks are also on offer, along with birdwatching sessions and, from November to March, night-time amphibian safaris.

When not out exploring the reserve, guests are free to make the most of the lodge’s facilities which include a swimming pool with sun loungers, a curio shop and a library. There’s also an indoor lounge with a fireplace, a welcoming bar area and an outdoor decking area, the perfect spot to unwind. The on-site spa is well equipped with a fitness room, infinity pool, an adults-only ‘tranquility’ area and a treatment room just for couples. All meals are freshly prepared and there’s a focus on African fusion cuisine. It’s also possible to enjoy private, open-air dinners under the stars.

The lodge welcomes children, although do note that families with children under eight looking to go out on game drives are required to pre-book a private vehicle for an additional charge. Parents are reminded to keep their children under close adult supervision at all times.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
