Overview

137 Pillars is an elegant boutique hotel set in a well-preserved building dating back to the colonial era. One of the most appealing aspects of the hotel is that even though it’s quite centrally located within Chiang Mai, it still offers plenty of peace and serenity. It’s a short walk from the Ping River and the old city, which is unique among Thailand’s other old cities in that its historic walls are still mostly intact. The city centre is just over a mile away and there are plenty of sights to see just a short walk away, including the city’s bustling and atmospheric Chiang Mai Night Bazaar.

All of the suites at 137 Pillars are designed to offer space, comfort and tranquility. They’re tastefully decorated and well-presented throughout, with considerable attention to detail and lots of nice little touches here and there. Those on the ground floor have their own private terrace complete with daybeds and rocking chairs for relaxing out in the open air, while those on the upper floor have their own private balcony with pleasant views of the area. Ceilings are high, beds are large and the en-suite bathrooms are extra spacious. There are four categories of suite altogether and all of them come with a range of convenient amenities, such as a flat-screen TV with DVD player, complimentary toiletries, slippers and bathrobes, air conditioning and a fan.

When not exploring the lively and frenetic city of Chiang Mai, guests can make use of the hotel’s many facilities. There’s a spa and wellness centre offering a variety of indulgent treatments, as well as Tai Chi and Yoga classes. The well-equipped fitness centre is open round-the-clock and there’s a narrow but long 25 meter outdoor lap pool with a striking vertical plant-covered wall to one side. The hotel offers a variety of dining options. Thai and Lanna food is served three times a day in the main restaurant, The Dining Room, with in-room and al fresco dining also an option. Gourmet dinners are served in Palette, and cocktails and ‘light bites’ are on offer in Jack Bain’s Bar with its delightful ‘old world’ feel. If that’s not enough, afternoon tea is also served in the hotel’s picturesque gardens.

Children are welcome at 137 pillars. Some of the Rajah Brooke suites are interconnecting and can work well for families, or extra beds and cots can be brought into rooms on request. Babysitting can be arranged a day in advance, although there are no designated children’s activities on offer. Parents should note that the lap pool is better suited to adult swimming and that children must remain under adult supervision at all times.

  • Dear Lisa. On behalf of the three generations of the Rowland family. Thank you, so much, for organising our wonderful holiday to Botswana and the Victoria Falls. The trip of a lifetime. The week mobile camping in the bush, with our guide Nandos and his crew was a fantastic adventure. How they manage to cook such wonderful food on an open fire is amazing. The sites were constantly visited by monkeys and once by elephants. We were even lucky enough to see two packs of wild dogs, once with a kill. Waterberry Lodge on the Zambezi River is a wonderfully tranquil place. Ideal to relax after the adventures of our safari and visiting Victoria Falls. Very many thanks once again
