The Tamarind is one of our favourite hotels in Chiang Mai. This luxury boutique hotel is named after a tamarind tree over 200 years old that keeps most of the property in welcome shade during the hot summer months. The hotel is located in the heart of the old City, yet offers guests a wonderful respite from the hustle and bustle of city life amidst beautiful gardens and traditional Lanna architecture.
There are 41 guest rooms and five suites at Tamarind Village spread amongst a number of courtyards filled with colourful flowers and lush vegetation. All accommodation is designed to be contemporary and stylish, with polished concrete floors, soft white bedding and a range of tribal fabrics giving the rooms a sense of elegance and character. Amenities such as air conditioning, coffee and tea making facilities, complimentary toiletries and a minibar/fridge are provided, while all bathrooms are fashioned with marble and come fully equipped. There’s plenty of room provided, though for more space and comfort, any one of the five suites is recommended.
Guests staying here can make use of the full-service Village Spa, which has a good range of indulgent treatments on offer. The Tamarind Boutique is the hotel’s on-site gift shop and sells a variety of designer clothing and jewellery, as well as local artefacts. For dining, there’s the Ruen Tamarind Restaurant, which is open for three meals a day, as well as afternoon tea, and offers both indoor and outdoor dining; in-room dining is also available until 10pm every day. The menu consists of both international cuisine and authentic Thai dishes from across the country.
Those wanting to immerse themselves in the local culture and traditions can take advantage of the many activities offered by the hotel, from joining in with hill tribe and flower garland weaving sessions, as well as umbrella painting. The hotel also offers daily walking tours of the historic sites in the area for no added cost, while the travel desk can arrange an array of both private and public tours to many of the city’s top places of interest. Trips to gardens, scenic spots and national parks are also available for those interested in seeing the captivating mountainous nature of northern Thailand. As the hotel is so centrally located, guests can always step out and explore the city at their own pace.
Children of all ages are welcome here, with cots, extra beds and a babysitting service all available on request. A limited number of interconnecting rooms are available. Parents should keep an eye on their children when by the pool.
We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!
The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.
I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.
The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.
All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).
From my seven-year-old son:
I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.
In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

We just wanted to thank you for an absolutely amazing holiday. Everything went exactly to plan and we were blown away with the quality of the guides, transport and accommodation. The itinerary was perfect for our family with a great mix of guided and free days and the different destinations complemented each other well. We will definitely be using Tourdust again for our next trip! Particular highlights were the Ha Long Bay cruise, Hanoi, and the morning cycle tour in Siam Reap
