Overview

The Aliya Resort and Spa is a good value, slick and modern hotel right in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle. Whilst we would usually prefer small character properties, these are sadly lacking in this price category in the Cultural Triangle, making The Aliya one of the best options in the area.

The resort offers breathtaking views of both Pidurangala Vihara, a Buddhist temple constructed on a large rock, and the Sigiriya, an ancient rock fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The resort is very eco-friendly throughout and is modern and minimalist in design.

When it comes to dining, guests staying at this contemporary resort can choose from a total of three restaurants. Alaka offers a sumptuous range of regional and national cuisine, while Makara has lots of tempting Chinese dishes on the menu. Over at Nagula, delicious Sri Lankan cuisine that’s prepared in clay pots and served in a traditional way can be enjoyed. For a light snack or hot coffee, there’s Migara, which also functions as a bar.

The Resort features an infinity pool set against the backdrop of the Sigiriya and the Pidurangala Vihara, gym and Spa offering traditional Ayurvedic treatments, yoga and meditation. There’s also an on-site Paddy Museum. The resort is well placed for visiting many of the Cultural Triangle’s top attractions.

The accommodation at Aliya Resort and Spa consists of 96 deluxe en-suite rooms and suites, as well as 18 luxury tents set in clearings in the wilderness. All the accommodation is spacious and plenty of amenities make for a comfortable, relaxing and convenient stay. The deluxe rooms and suites are characterised by pleasant elephant theming and offer wonderful views of the resort’s gardens - some of them even have views of Sigiriya. As for the tents, each one is set on a wooden platform covered by a thatched roof, complete with a shaded veranda area.

Some of the many amenities available in all the accommodation types include tea and coffee making facilities, Wi-Fi, an LCD TV with satellite channels, an electronic safe, a minibar and air conditioning. In the bathroom there's a bathtub and a separate shower with a rainfall showerhead. Note that for the tents, there’s a small wooden cabin attached to the rear with private bathroom facilities.

Children are very welcome, however they must be aged 12 or over to stay in the luxury tents.

  • We had such a good holiday. You did a fantastic job!

The house in Marrakesh was ridiculous. We effectively had it to ourselves. The accommodation was borderline palatial.

I actually think that the time we had in Marrakesh was sufficient. We could potentially have done a day by a pool but I think we’d done enough souk-ing by the end of Day Two.

The hotel in the mountains was a shade more rustic than I was expecting, but all great fun. Stunning views. The guide / mule / cook team were excellent and our guide (Hassan) tailored the treks to our capabilities well. He was superb, and really made an effort with the kids. The second and third day of trekking were particularly good. Such an adventure for the kids.

All the logistics worked seamlessly. Every aspect went like clockwork. Top marks. The advice on tipping was also much appreciated (I hate thinking that I’m getting mugged off or am potentially not giving enough…).

    From my seven-year-old son:

I thought it was GREAT. The food was amazing and the culture was very interesting. My favourite bit was scrambling up rocks in the Atlas Mountains.

In retrospect, I’d probably do the trip in reverse. Flopping on the roof terrace after the rigours of the mountains would have been even more satisfying.

  • We just wanted to thank you for an absolutely amazing holiday. Everything went exactly to plan and we were blown away with the quality of the guides, transport and accommodation. The itinerary was perfect for our family with a great mix of guided and free days and the different destinations complemented each other well. We will definitely be using Tourdust again for our next trip! Particular highlights were the Ha Long Bay cruise, Hanoi, and the morning cycle tour in Siam Reap
