Swellendam is a pretty town by a meandering river in a tranquil valley, bordered by the towering Langeberg Mountains. With good eateries, an interesting museum, and scenic colonial architecture, it is conveniently placed for the Little Karoo, and makes an attractive stopover between Cape Town and the glorious Garden Route.
If you only have a night in Swellendam, then we recommend a visit to the Drostdy Museum - the former Dutch East India Company residence and official headquarters for the Landdrost. If you are staying 2 nights, then we would recommend taking half a day visiting the Bontebok National Park, a small but lovely National Park with large herds of Zebra, bontebok and red hartebeast. In town itself there are a number of lovely restaurants.
Our pick of the accommodation is the exquisitely restored Victorian gem of Schoone Oordt Country House (as featured in the image above).
