Kenya is perfect for the first family safari, the parks are easily accessible and wildlife is abundant. Assuming you’ll save that luxury splurge safari for when you are ‘sans enfant’, the focus here is on superb guiding and comfort rather than indulgent luxury.

We have designed this itinerary with a nice balance of game drives and activities, with cycling in Hells Gate National Park, a boat trip on Lake Naivasha and a once in a lifetime experience camping in a Maasai village where your children can try their hand at shooting bow and arrows, Maasai dancing and lighting fires.

The safari includes two days of game drives (one in the Maasai Mara Reserve and one in Lake Nakuru Reserve), a game walk on the Loita Plains and Hell's Gate National Park (cycling) and a boat trip to see the hippos and game in Lake Naivasha. The Maasai Mara National Reserve is Kenya’s premiere safari park, a vast expanse of savannah grassland heavily populated year-round with wildlife. There is always a strong chance of seeing lion in the park. Leopard and Cheetah are rarer but sightings are possible. Elephant, buffalo and wildebeest are common. The rivers and hippo pools play host to crocs and hippos. In season the park plays host to the epic Wildebeest Migration (late June – early September).

Lake Nakuru National Park is a small, but perfectly formed park set around a lake famous for its large flamingo and pelican populations. It is one of the best places in Kenya to spot rhino and buffalo, giraffe and zebra are all easy to spot.

Getting there

International flights from the UK to Kenya typically cost £750 - £1250 return per person (see below for more detail) depending on the airline and when you are travelling. Please get in touch for a flight inclusive quote.

Direct Flights from the UK (London Heathrow only): £750 - £1250 return
British Airways and Kenya Airways fly direct from London Heathrow to Nairobi. Prices start from £750 return but direct flights at this price are usually only available if booking very early or for visits out of the school holidays. During school holiday periods, prices are usually over £1000 return.

Indirect Flights from the UK: £600 - £900 return
KLM flights via Amsterdam are a superb alternative to direct flights, particularly if you are flying from Manchester, Glasgow or other regional airports, where you would need to stop anyway. Prices start from £650 return, and are usually available under £800pp year round as long as you have a little flexibility in your dates. Qatar, Turkish and Ethiopian Airlines offer slightly less convenient one stop flights with longer stop-overs / less convenient flight times (e.g. Turkish lands at 4am in Nairobi). We sometimes recommend these flights for those on a tight budget or those late booking during peak periods when flight prices on BA, Kenya Airways or KLM can double.

If you book a flight inclusive package with Tourdust, your booking is protected by the ATOL scheme. We charge a £20 per person service charge for researching and booking flights for you. If you wish to book flights yourself, then we are happy to sell a ground arrangement only package.

Price includes

Price given is an indication only based on a family of four with two children under 12, actual rate depends on the season and the number of age of children. The price includes all accommodation, meals and transfers to/from Nairobi as set out in the itinerary. You will have the services of an English speaking naturalist guide and a private vehicle on safari. The price also includes all the Park fees and all camping equipment.

The price does not include international flights to Kenya, visas, personal insurance, Alcoholic and soft drinks and tips. Please ask for a flight inclusive quote.

When is best?

Kenya is a fantastic destination for a family safari. Visits are possible during all school holiday periods, with the exception of Easter Holidays which coincide with the long rains.

See our advice on holidays in Kenya during UK half term, Easter, Christmas and Summer School holidays here..

Is it for me?

This holiday is designed specifically for families. Because you will have a private vehicle and guide to yourselves, we don't have any fixed age limits. The advantage of this is that you can choose when and where you want to stop, what animals you want to focus on and how much down time you have. Generally speaking, children aged around 6 and over will get more out of the experience than those younger. As they get older, they will have more patience for game drives and get more out of the opportunity to chat and learn from guides.

The overall level of accommodation is very comfortable, but not luxurious. The road between Nairobi and the Masai Mara is not in great condition and the 5 -6 hours return drive to Nairobi is fairly arduous. For extra cost, you may wish to consider taking a scheduled small aircraft flight.

  • We had an amazing trip. Everything was well thought out and so much fun. What a great way to truly see the country and learn the culture.

Joseph was the perfect guide. Very kind, professional, knowledgeable and patient. The kids loved Joseph and keep asking when will they meet him again. He found the Big 5 for us which was unforgettable! Please pass along our appreciation to Joseph.

Maji Moto was also another incredible experience. They had great customer service and we loved experiencing their culture.

Sunbird was absolutely beautiful and I wish we had more time there. We loved the view of the lake!

One suggestion to make the trip even better for other guests in the future would be to have a cooler with drinks and snacks in the Jeep at all times because a ton of driving is involved and it would be helpful to have a cold drink and snacks during the long trip.

Thanks again for organizing this experience of a lifetime for us!

  • We had an amazing time thank you. The itinerary was great as we felt like we saw lots of different things and it kept it interesting for our daughter. She especially loved the gorge at Hells Gate.

Unfortunately the Menengai Crater walk was a bit hard for her although that probably had something to do with how hot it was!

We especially loved the Sunbird Lodge - it is such a beautiful place and all the staff were so incredibly welcoming and friendly.

Our guide, Joseph, was exceptional too and we can’t speak highly enough of him.

  • Everything was exceptionally well arranged and the whole trip, from checking in on line and printing out the outward journey boarding cards from home, until return to Heathrow, was completely seamless.

Although arriving slightly earlier than scheduled, we didn't have to wait before being collected at Nairobi by Elijah, our guide and Samuel the driver. On being told that we had hardly slept at all on the outward journey, they took us to a small B&B place they use (sorry, I've forgotten the name of the place) and we were able to rest/sleep for some 3 hours before setting off on our adventure. This was very much appreciated by us as that first day was full on after that.

They looked after us really well and both were very knowledgeable and good company and were flexible to our needs, with nothing being too much trouble for them.

The accommodation you picked for us was spot on. We were particularly taken with Sunbird Lodge (I could have spent the whole week there if it were not for being on the move due to the nature of the trip), which was quite informal and extremely friendly. We then moved on to the Maji Moto Eco Camp, where again everything was fine. Having stayed in similar places before, at my age now, the one night suited well and I was surprised when Dan was so taken with the place that he would have liked to stay another night! I think the camp fire might have had something to do with it. The visit to the school was also well worth it from Dan's perspective.

On then to Ilkeliani and I concur with what you say about it being so well priced for what it offers, that it is a good recommendation. This was slightly more formal at mealtimes than Sunbird Lodge but nevertheless, the staff were equally friendly. As adults, both my husband and myself enjoyed the food although the feedback I provided on their customer satisfaction questionnaire was that perhaps the evening meals could possibly have slight variations for children. We didn't see any signs of the suspended footbridge and as we didn't ask about it, I don't know whether it's still there or not.

I have to say that the beds in both Sunbird and Ilkeliani were very, very, comfortable.

The Mayfair Southern Sun was again a good choice although I think the room we had was perhaps a standard twin room. There were two what I call "three quarters" sized beds, i.e. larger than a single but not quite a double bed size, which meant it was a bit of a squeeze for 2 persons in one bed.

Both the Giraffe Centre and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Sanctuary were ideal additions to the itinerary. We had a 10 year old who was reluctant to leave Kenya!
