Pakamisa is a luxury safari lodge set high up on a breath-taking mountain plateau. Situated within the Pakamisa private game reserve in the KwaZulu-Natal province of north eastern South Africa, it makes for an ideal base for anyone looking to explore the area. This striking, upmarket property blends Spanish and African architecture and offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountain scenery, as well as the vast valley and meandering river down below. The property has a somewhat formal, adult atmosphere, although children are more than welcome.

There are eight safari-style suites at the lodge, each of which comfortably accommodates two people. The suites are a short walk from the main reception building, laid out across the peaceful and beautifully landscaped gardens. Each suite is styled after a particular animal that can be found within the reserve itself and features a number of individual artefacts and paintings. Some amenities common to all suites include an en-suite bathroom with shower and separate bathtub, toiletries and a bathrobe, a minibar and tea and coffee making facilities. In a deliberate attempt to keep the lodge as technology-free as possible, there are no televisions, phones or Wi-Fi in the private rooms, although internet access is possible in the main reception area.

There’s a broad range of dining experiences on offer. The main restaurant has indoor seating, as well as an outdoor dining area. Three meals a day are served, with dinner consisting of four courses presented in an elegant, formal setting. Menus feature modern international dishes, with food freshly prepared on-site.

One aspect of the lodge that sets it apart from others is that it's home to a number of Arabian horses which have been specially trained by the lodge’s owner and are readily available for those looking to go out on horseback safari expeditions. Both beginners and more advanced riders are welcome, with professional guides helping children and adults alike make the most of their experience. There are several different trails for both horseback rides and regular walking treks, with plenty of flora and fauna to discover along the way. Birdwatching walks and guided tours of the lodge’s botanical gardens are popular pursuits, as are thrilling game drives across the 2,500-hectare reserve which reveal an array of animals from warthogs and antelope, to wildebeest, giraffes and many more. In addition to nature-based activities, the lodge offers rifle, hand gun and clay pigeon shooting, plus archery. Boat cruises on the nearby Jonizi Dam and visits to local orphanages and schools can also be arranged.

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”

  • It was certainly a holiday of a lifetime for us and we loved every minute!! The standard and location of each accommodation was excellent, as was the variety of each different accommodation type. Our schedule was perfect and we managed to achieve everything on our to-do task list. Your documents were also really helpful, as were the driving directions. We all thank you for making this such a wonderful holiday. Happy to leave a review publicly if you point me the right way. Best Steve

  • Hi Lisa, We had a fabulous time thank you. The accommodation and other ideation were all terrific - that’s so much for your help. The apartment in Cape Town was particularly good - we would never have found that: Boschendal was great as well and game lodge was superb. Thanks again, Alistair
