Overview

Amanwella is an upmarket retreat in a tranquil beachfront setting on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Set amidst 37 acres of coconut palms, this exclusive resort offers contemporary suites with private plunge pools, plus a restaurant and lounge bar, a wonderful communal pool, a boutique, spa, and a private beach club, all on a pristine stretch of sand fringed by the Indian Ocean. Ideally located for the seaside town of Tangalle and 80km east of the popular UNESCO world heritage site of Galle, Amanwella is an idyllic, select option at the higher end of the budget spectrum.

Communal areas include the main restaurant which is set beside a peaceful courtyard and boasts wonderful ocean views from its raised terrace. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the extensive menu spans Asian and Mediterranean cuisine, focusing on locally-sourced ingredients and seafood. Private dining can be accommodated. The resort’s 47 metre pool, complete with daybeds and loungers, has a lovely terrace for snacks and alfresco dining, whilst an informal lounge bar offers light meals and afternoon tea. Lunch and private evening meals are available at Amanwella’s beach club, surrounded by picturesque palm trees. Further amenities include a library, and a boutique selling jewellery, textiles, and antiques. Massages and various beauty treatments are offered at the spa, or in the privacy of individual suites. Guided meditation and yoga sessions can also be arranged.

The adjacent 800 metre beach is a sunbather’s paradise, and during winter months the calm waters are ideal for snorkelling. Several local beaches offer great surfing during the summer season. Nature lovers can spot monkeys, monitor lizards, and mongooses on walking trails through the surrounding jungle, and observe baby turtles hatching by moonlight at a number of local protected sites. The nearby bustling market town of Tangalle is a short drive away, whilst Mirissa Bay, an hour’s drive west, is popular for whale and dolphin watching. The stunning Mulkirigala rock temple, famed for its ancient Buddhist statues and cave paintings, is a half hour drive away.

The accommodation comprises 30 stylish and contemporary suites spread out across the hillside. Each airy suite has floor to ceiling glass doors on two sides, opening onto private terraces with lovely views. The open plan interiors comprise a sleeping area with a king size bed, a comfortable lounge area with minibar and Wi-Fi, and a spacious bathroom with freestanding bathtub, twin basins, and a separate shower and WC. Outside is a generous terrace with a private plunge pool, loungers, and an alfresco dining area with table and chairs. All suites overlook the surrounding gardens, and many have spectacular ocean views.

Children are extremely welcome at Amanwella and a number of the suites are interconnected, ideal for families or larger groups.

  • Thank you yet again for another meticulously organised and executed holiday (our 5th with you). Every aspect worked perfectly.
Please could you pass on our sincere thanks to your agent in Sri Lanka; Lakshita, our driver and guide, absolutely made the trip for us - he was so keen for us to have the best experience possible. He was organised, kind, interested, punctual, the car was always spotless, and he was an excellent driver. His extensive knowledge was really appreciated by us and was exactly what we had hoped for in a guide. I think the highlight for us was our day in Anuradhapura (7 hours of absorbing history and culture), but there was so much to learn and absorb every day. He also made several suggestions for things that he thought we might like that weren't in our itinerary, and then booked them for us. These included an ayurvedic massage after climbing Sigiriya, a cultural show (an hour of touristy fun!), reef snorkelling with turtles (a real highlight for me - I wish we could have stayed all day), a lagoon boat trip and visit to a cinnamon island, a turtle sanctuary visit, and a gemstone factory visit. He also managed to get us a private tour of Lunanguga, which Peter thoroughly enjoyed. We also really enjoyed the tea factory tour.
Our guide for the hike was also really excellent, and he and Lakshita made sure that our day was perfectly tailored to our (my) ability.
All our accommodation was also perfectly selected. Our favourite was the Ceylon tea trails bungalow (just perfect!), but The Villa Bentota came a close second as a perfect way to relax at the end of the trip. Our villa and the grounds at Uga at Ulagalla were also beautiful.
(Our only slightly disappointing day was the whale watching - no whales wanted to be seen on that particular day, plus I was very sea-sick despite taking meds! The tour organisers offered us a repeat day the following day, which we declined! Having said that, being out on the water was still enjoyable, up to a point...).
I'm sure I've missed out something - we basically loved it all and felt that the balance of the itinerary was perfect for us (we used the 'rest' day in Galle to do the snorkelling, lagoon, and turtles)
    Thank you very, very much.

  • We just wanted to thank you for an absolutely amazing holiday. Everything went exactly to plan and we were blown away with the quality of the guides, transport and accommodation. The itinerary was perfect for our family with a great mix of guided and free days and the different destinations complemented each other well. We will definitely be using Tourdust again for our next trip! Particular highlights were the Ha Long Bay cruise, Hanoi, and the morning cycle tour in Siam Reap
