Dalyan is a picturesque town in South West Turkey, located on the River Kaunos, about a 30 minute boat trip to the sea. With the benefit of strict planning regulations, the town has retained its character and whilst it is popular with tourists, there are no high rise hotels or thumping night clubs. It is the hub town for adventure tourism in the region, popular in particular with kayakers and water lovers. The Mediterranean coastline here is varied, dotted with many small islands and interesting bays. The rocky coast makes for some excellent snorkelling, whilst children and sunbathers can enjoy some sandy beaches, a relative rarity in the Mediterranean. Inland, the terrain is equally stunning, with the impressive Taurus mountains towering in the distance. Here, rural mountain villages are interspersed with canyons and rivers. The area has much to offer from a cultural point of view as well. On the opposite side of the river from Dalyan, you can see some ancient Lycian rock tombs and a short walk takes you to the impressive Roman ruins, complete with amphitheatre.

This family activity holiday is all about combining adventure, relaxation and quality family time. You will be based in the pretty and understated riverside town of Dalyan, a far cry from the garish resorts found further along the coast. You will spend a day seeing the beautiful coast by kayak, paddling through turquoise waters and exploring the numerous coves and secluded bays that this coastline has to offer. Another day is spent on a boat trip visiting the snorkelling highlights of the area, including a cave that you can swim through. After your fill of coast based activities, you will then head inland and spend a day canyoning and swimming in the naturally formed rock pools. In between these activities, you have days at leisure when you will be based in Dalyan. On these days, you can see the ancient rock tombs and visit the ancient Kaunos ruins, catch a boat and spend the day at the beach, or simply relax at your hotel, by the pool.

A typical Itinerary is as follows, the activities are in open groups, and private tours are available on request (extra cost applies). The exact ordering of the activities is subject to change

Once everybody is ready, you leave Sarigerme beach for nearby Baba Island. Paddling out from a flat river mouth to the open sea, you reach the island, then paddle along the coast to the high open cave. Here you can see thousands of colours at the bottom of the sea through the crystal clear water. On one of the small inlets
there is time to relax, swim, jump off a high rock and enjoy a snack. If you have brought your own snorkel gear you can do some snorkelling.

Following the Southern shore of the island, you continue on to a sandy beach. There will be time for more swimming or sunbathing while your guide prepares a picnic lunch.

In the afternoon you begin your return paddle along the northern shore of the island with a quick stop on a pebble beach. While paddling between the rocks you can see the fish swimming under your kayak. Alternatively, you may paddle close to the Sarigerme beach, depending on the weather and the sea conditions.

Once you reach the river mouth, you paddle upstream for a short while and end the tour back at the start point. After loading the kayaks, you drive back to Dalyan in jeeps.

You can jump in the crystal clear water and snorkel through the cave to the other side where the boat will pick you up again. In the cave you will see a variety of marine life life and fantastic coloured rock formations.

Once everybody is back on board, you sail on to another small bay, Semizce. The Captain will throw out the anchor and everybody can jump in to snorkel or swim, or simply stay on board to relax or play on the sandy beach... Meanwhile your lunch will be prepared: a delicious BBQ, served with home-made ‘meze’ (starters), salad and grilled vegetables...After lunch, on to another bay for some more marine wildlife and nice beaches... Is it for me?

This is the perfect holiday for active families with a sense of adventure. It is suitable for children ages 8 and over. If your children are under 8, then you might want to consider our family gulet holiday. Due to the nature of the activities involved and to maximise your enjoyment, we recommend that everyone in your family can swim.

The activities will be with other people, with maximum group sizes of 14 for the sea kayaking and 25 on the snorkelling trip. Other participants will be a mixture of families and adults. Both of the hotels that we have selected for this holiday are family friendly.

On the sea kayaking excursion, children aged between 8 - 12 will need to go in a kayak with an adult.

Dalyan itself is a family friendly destination, well away from the bright lights and night clubs found further along the coast. The town is centred around a central square, which houses a lovely playground where the children can play whilst their parents can enjoy a drink and watch the world go by.

  • My son, around whom the holiday was designed, gave it 9/10. Not sure where the point was lost!

  • The holiday was amazing. We loved every minute of it.

MissingKathleen Puech reviewing Family Activity Holiday in Turkey on 21 August 2013

  • All three guides, one on each trip were excellent, coped with the variety of people on the trips well - especially so on the Canyoning - were knowledgable, competent and friedndly. Only slight disappointment was the snorkleing trip which was enjoyable but there wasn't a lot pointed out to look at; so kayaking and canyoning 5, snorkelling 4. The Riverside hotel - great, couldn't fault it for the price range. Staff really friendly and helpful, rooms basic but good, pool excellent. A really enjoyable trip, I would recommend it to others.
