Overview

Seated within a dune valley in the 200,000 hectare NamibRand Nature Reserve, southwestern Namibia, Private Camp is a self-catering villa that must be booked out exclusively, ensuring total peace and privacy amidst the striking red desert sands. Ideal for a relaxing stay at the end of a busy safari, the reserve isn’t home to the hugest concentration of large game, but sightings of zebra, antelope, oryx, and springbok are common, and the surrounding flora, flauna and magical landscape will make for a fascinating stay.

The camp comprises large, comfortable, canvas-topped structures set upon raised wooden platforms and the canvas walls can be rolled up to allow uninterrupted views of the superb surroundings. The main camp area is open plan with a warm, rustic feel. Leather sofas, a writing table, and a small library form the lounge area, and the dining table neighbours the fully-equipped kitchen. High-quality food supplies are provided should guests wish to cook themselves, or alternatively a private chef is available at additional cost. There is plenty of outdoor seating on the decking surrounding the buildings, and a lovely 'sala' provides a comfortable spot for a siesta. There’s a plunge pool overlooking a small but well frequented waterhole which offers welcome refreshment from the heat.

The villa contains three spacious twin or double rooms, each with an ensuite bathroom complete with shower, flushing toilet, and basin. The rooms are well-appointed, with four-poster beds draped in mosquito nets, indoor sofas with lovely views, and private decks.

A variety of activities are on offer including scenic drives and gentle nature walks. Hot-air ballooning and scenic flights are available for anyone seeking to take in the landscape on a grander scale. Activities can be shared with other lodge and camp guests, or booked out exclusively, at additional cost. While there are some wildlife opportunities, the primary draw is rest, relaxation and reconnection with the wilderness. For those who wish to learn a little more about ecotourism, an enlightening tour of the nearby village educates guests about Wolwedans' various sustainability and social projects.

Of all the Wolwedans properties, Private Camp is the most suited to families, since camp bookings are for only one group at a time, so there’s the freedom to relax without the worry of disturbing other guests. The 'sala' can be converted into a makeshift bedroom for small children, although it is set slightly apart from the other buildings and is not ensuite. Due to age restrictions on some activities, families are required to book private activities at additional cost. Babysitting can be arranged, though note that staff are not professionally trained. Although the risk of animals approaching camp is low, parental supervision is essential at all times, particularly for young children since the plunge pool is unfenced and set on a deck with a steep drop.

Private Camp is perfect for travellers seeking seclusion and tranquility in a stunning setting, a gem of a hideaway offering ultimate privacy amidst an exquisite desert setting.

  • I was also just about to email you to thank you and the team for arranging yet again, another wonderful experience.

Mount Kenya was spectacular and wild - I think I prefer it to Kili in many ways. The entire support team was professional, friendly and all round fantastic in making sure that we were safe, well fed and well looked after. In particular, we would commend Peter the guide as well as Paul one of the porters who doubled-up as his deputy on summit day. Our route was often shrouded in mist and rain that rapidly gathered in the valleys and moorlands, and we were very impressed at how Peter managed to navigate us safely through all of that notwithstanding. In addition, we loved learning about the history of Mount Kenya from him in the evenings. And ofcourse, I was blown away by the lovely birthday surprise at the end complete with balloons and a delicious cake that had journeyed with us from day 1. One thing we might recommend because of the sudden change in weather (it would sometimes get extremely cold and wet) is for the equipment list to be a little bit more detailed in terms of its recommendations e.g. layers to be moisture-wicking, walking boots be waterproof, doubling up on socks to avoid blisters etc.

El Karama is a beautiful conservancy and the lodge a true labour of love. Great hospitality in a relaxed environment. Delicious, fresh food. We enjoyed the drives, even if we didn't see much wildlife as the heavens opened on us for the last two outings. However, since it was very much geared towards families, I am not sure if I would stay again without kids. That said, I think it was perfect for a 3d/2n stay post mountain, and a much better choice than flying to the masai mara given the limited time we had.

Our transits were smooth. Samuel the driver was always on time, drove safely and kept the vehicle clean.

So it was a brilliant experience and one which I certainly will cherish for some time to come. It was great to work with you for a third time, and I certainly hope it won't be the last

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”
