Overview

Located 45km south of its sister Wolwedans properties, Boulders is a remote and exclusive camp with access to the southern-most reaches of the NamibRand Nature Reserve, southwestern Namibia. Against the backdrop of enormous granite boulders, the camp boasts stunning views across the plains to the mountains in the distance. This delightful and ‘other-wordly’ location is reached via a 15km road transfer from Aandster Farm.

The main area comprises a lounge, dining room and kitchen in one central tent. The lounge is cosy and inviting and houses a small library, leather sofas, and vintage safari equipment. Evening meals are generally served beneath a lantern chandelier around the communal table in the dining room, although requests for private dining can be made. Breakfast is a sociable occasion, served on decking around an open fire place amidst a ring of boulders. There is also a small plunge pool. Although WiFi is available in the main areas, the service can be patchy and there is no mobile reception, so a stay at Boulders Camp is a real opportunity to switch off and relax in a truly secluded setting.

There are only four tents at the camp, all of them spacious and built on raised wooden decks. Canvas stretched across wooden frames can be noisy when windy, but earplugs are provided, and for chillier nights, hot water bottles are offered too. The rooms are simply but elegantly decorated, each with a large four-poster bed draped in mosquito netting and flanked by a dressing table, coffee table and chairs. Although not actually ensuite, bathrooms are private and are located just outside the main bedroom, each with shower, flush toilet, and twin basins. Outside, there’s a veranda complete with sun loungers and benches on which to relax and take in the scenery.

The camp’s remote location means that some of the usual Wolwedans activities such as hot-air ballooning and scenic flights, are not possible. Activities here are centred on guided scenic drives and walking safaris. Guests come to witness the breath-taking scenery, with wildlife sightings an added bonus; lucky visitors may glimpse a variety of antelope, with giraffe, zebra, and ostrich a possibility, but carnivore sightings are rare. The night skies are crystal clear since no there’s no light pollution to obscure the stars, and sundowners on a nearby mountain plateau are a real highlight.

Children over the age of six are welcome. Although there are no designated family units, and staff are always happy to add an extra bed to accommodate children, the camp does have an adult atmosphere. Its appeal is remoteness and tranquility, and while it may suit some older children with a genuine love of nature, suites at Wolwedans Dunes Lodge or Private Camp may be more appropriate for families. Since the camp is unfenced, parental supervision is essential at all times.

Boulders Safari Camp will delight any traveller seeking to unwind in a unique and enchanting environment. The exclusive nature of the camp means there’s inevitably a price tag to match, but it’s certainly worth ‘pushing the boat out’ if you can.

  • I was also just about to email you to thank you and the team for arranging yet again, another wonderful experience.

Mount Kenya was spectacular and wild - I think I prefer it to Kili in many ways. The entire support team was professional, friendly and all round fantastic in making sure that we were safe, well fed and well looked after. In particular, we would commend Peter the guide as well as Paul one of the porters who doubled-up as his deputy on summit day. Our route was often shrouded in mist and rain that rapidly gathered in the valleys and moorlands, and we were very impressed at how Peter managed to navigate us safely through all of that notwithstanding. In addition, we loved learning about the history of Mount Kenya from him in the evenings. And ofcourse, I was blown away by the lovely birthday surprise at the end complete with balloons and a delicious cake that had journeyed with us from day 1. One thing we might recommend because of the sudden change in weather (it would sometimes get extremely cold and wet) is for the equipment list to be a little bit more detailed in terms of its recommendations e.g. layers to be moisture-wicking, walking boots be waterproof, doubling up on socks to avoid blisters etc.

El Karama is a beautiful conservancy and the lodge a true labour of love. Great hospitality in a relaxed environment. Delicious, fresh food. We enjoyed the drives, even if we didn't see much wildlife as the heavens opened on us for the last two outings. However, since it was very much geared towards families, I am not sure if I would stay again without kids. That said, I think it was perfect for a 3d/2n stay post mountain, and a much better choice than flying to the masai mara given the limited time we had.

Our transits were smooth. Samuel the driver was always on time, drove safely and kept the vehicle clean.

So it was a brilliant experience and one which I certainly will cherish for some time to come. It was great to work with you for a third time, and I certainly hope it won't be the last

  • Thank you, we had an absolute wonderful time, and everything was well-planned and as described. Carla was crying on the day of our departure from Ants Nest, she didn’t want to go home and for it all to end, and when I asked how much longer she would want to stay, she responded “four weeks”
