Spend just over 5 days walking along the stunning and changing nature of the Heaphy track, one of the most beautiful walks in New Zealand. Sleep in huts and enjoy gourmet food on your way, as you experience why this country is in so many people’s hearts.
The Heaphy track in Kahurangi National Park in the north east of the south island, is the second largest national park in New Zealand, and home to a vast range of geographic, floral and faunal variety. Named after the explorer Charles Heaphy, who made his way through the rough landscape 150 years ago, this track is today on the list of Great Walks by the NZ Department of Conservation. After almost becoming a road, the area is conserved today for the growing enjoyment of tourists and conservation of the natural landscape of New Zealand.
The track is a true dreamworld of flora, fauna and rock, and every 20 km of this 78,4 km track will have something new in store for you. Ridges, beaches, small peaks and far-reaching views await you, as you make your way through, shrubs, beech forests and stroll along the beautiful seafront. You will walk through Podocarp forests, a unique and ancient family of trees, which are worth the trip in themselves. Combine this with friendly and professional guides, delicious home-made food and comfortable walking pace, and you should have all your heart’s desires.
Do you like hiking? Enjoy spending the night in remote huts in beautiful, conserved nature areas and with a small group of people to accompany you? Then this is definitely the tour for you. Whilst you have to be in fairly good shape, as some of the day trips near 20 km, this is a highly enjoyable experience that aims at letting you see the national park at a leisurely pace, rather than race for a gold medal. Ideal for couples or single travellers, but also accessible for families with children who are old enough to manage the walk.
