Wanaka is a popular tourist resort on New Zealand’s South Island known for its range of outdoor activities on offer there and around. Lake Wanaka, whilst also loved for being much less commercialised than nearby locations such as Queenstown, is a destination in its own right. It boasts one of New Zealand’s sunniest climates and is popular for Mountain Biking, hiking and paragliding as well fishing. Lake Wanaka and neighbouring Lake Hawea offer extensive opportunities for fishing and with your expert guide, Craig, you can expect to have a truly memorable fishing trip!

You will be spending a full two days of fly fishing in the rivers, streams and lakes of Wanaka and Hawea, surrounded by the natural beauty of the region; although there will be little time for sightseeing whilst you are stalking or ambushing your next big catch. You will be taught how to fly fish, in the classic New Zealand South Island style, for wild brown and rainbow trout. Your guide can offer tuition for all levels of skill and for the more experienced angler you can get some valuable local knowledge. After your first day you will be taken to your backcountry hut for the night where you can relax and tell stories of the one that got away.

This is perfect for anyone who has a keen interest in fishing and loves the great outdoors. Sleeping in the New Zealand wilderness is an experience in itself, but also getting two full days of guided fly fishing in some of the country’s best fishing locations makes for a truly special trip. Most locations have easy access to them so all levels of fitness are catered for, but you should be prepared to get yourself soaking wet!

Getting there

Wanaka is an hour away from Queenstown Airport and Hawea is a further 15 minutes. The fly fishing guides will pick you up from accommodation in Wanaka or Hawea.
