Riding in Cotopaxi National Park in Ecuador!

Cotopaxi National Park

Reaching an altitude of 5897m, Cotopaxi in north Ecuador is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. It is also the only place you’ll find snow this close to the equator, and its unique conical shape make it a superb setting for horse riding around this beautiful country.

About 45 kms south of Ecuador’s capital, Quito, lies Cotopaxi, one of the highest active volcanoes in the world and the second largest mountain in Ecuador. The snow topped Cotopaxi is almost exactly the same height as Kilimanjaro, but unlike its famous equatorial cousin is not overly commercialised and is surrounded by similarly impressive peaks. The terrain is both spectacular and varied - old Inca trails, deep green gorges and strange lunar landscapes are just some of the experiences that await you in the heart of the Andes. As a horse riding tour, this is about as good as it gets.

In addition to the breathtaking scenery of Cotopaxi National Park, you’ll also get to see some wildlife endemic to the region, including the majestic Andean condor. The tour places an emphasis on the culture of Ecuador too, so you will spend some time getting insight into how folk in the mountainous areas live.

The guides who organise these tours are exceptional at their jobs. They’re a British-run company who have been at the top of their game for the last 13 years, so you know you’re in good hands when you sign up for an Ecuadorian tour.

There are a number of considerations to be taken before booking a horse riding trek through the Andes. On the Cotopaxi tour you will need to have some skill with a horse and will need to be comfortable with open canter and traversing steep terrain.

The operator has a strict rule on the weight of riders limited to 85kg (roughly 13.5 stone.) It’s important also to make sure you’re good with altitude - although the guides go to great lengths to make sure you acclimatise properly, getting up to 4,000 meters can have some adverse effects. As always, double check with your doctor if in doubt and make sure you have comprehensive travel and medical insurance.

Also bear in mind that the tour is heavily dependant on weather conditions, so the itinerary and accommodation listed may be adjusted at very short notice.
