Inspire and be inspired on holiday by volunteering abroad in a Cape Town school. Spend a fortnight helping out as a classroom assistant in a local township school and mucking in with some community projects in the area.
You will spend each morning in one of three deprived pre-schools or primary schools in the Cape Town slums. Your role is as flexible as you are and can range from helping children to read and write, to organising craft activities and helping out with mealtimes and classroom maintenance.
After lunch with the other volunteers in your communal house, which will serve as a base for your time here, you will spend the afternoon helping out with one of 3 local community projects. You will rotate between doing maintenance and repair of tired classrooms, working at a community outreach centre and helping out at the local library.
In the evening, you will be picked up and taken home for dinner. You can then spend the rest of the night relaxing, or go out socialising with the other volunteers.
To each of the projects that you work on, you will be able to give something truly unique and special. Whether it is teaching someone new computer skills, fixing a broken window or finger-painting with pre-schoolers. There are so many ways that you can make a difference and also get a totally new outlook on life.
Given that you have come all the way to Cape Town, you will also want to make sure that you also get a chance to take in some of the local sights and sounds. Included in your trip price is a tour out to Cape Point and a chance to see the penguins at Boulders Beach. You will also be taken up the cable car to visit the world famous summit of Table Mountain. Don’t stop there! After you have finished your volunteering, you could head off down the Garden route or go off on safari…..
Volunteering holidays are absolutely not for beach bunnies or sunbed slaves. You will be working on this holiday with no air con and some degree of physical work. However, this is a very genuine opportunity to meet local people and gain an insight into their lives and culture. And there is always the chance to extend your trip so that you can have some R & R afterwards – which you will have well and truly earned!
You will be spending a lot of time with young children, working in the schools and on the community projects, so an interest in education and a degree of patience would be helpful.
Some volunteers view the experience as a chance to make new friends and enjoy socialising with each other in the evenings. You don’t have to participate, but bear in mind that you will be living in communal accommodation, so some degree of social interaction is likely!
