Enjoy a guided walk and some scrambling in the little-explored forests and crags of the Sierra de Huetor range. Trips can be tailored to suit any ability or timeframe, from leisurely half-day strolls to challenging multi-day traverses.
At just 2,000 metres in height, the Sierra de Huetor are quite a bit smaller than their more famous neighbours, the Sierra Nevada, but what they lack in size they more than make up for in raw natural beauty. With just a handful of hikers visiting the range each month – and no obvious trails or paths - the Sierra de Huetor has a wild frontier quality that’s hard to find anywhere in Europe these days, let alone in southern Spain. The mountains abound with animal and plant life; look out for owls, lizards, wild cats and the elusive golden eagle. The oak and maple forests are the ideal place to spot Mediterranean and North African bird species, while on the higher slopes you’ll find limestone crags with great scrambling and climbing potential.
This tour can be tailored to suit most abilities and timeframes. Starting from the nearby town of Lanjarón, you can enjoy a half-day trek or something a little longer. We recommend getting up high – some of the summits are easily a match for those of the Sierra Nevada, and you’ll have them all to yourself!
The Sierra de Huetor aren’t for everyone. You’ll need to be in pretty good shape, especially on longer hikes, as there are few well-trodden trails. However, if you’ve got a bit of trekking experience and fancy trying something a little different, this can be a really rewarding trip. You’re unlikely to come across any other hikers as you explore the slopes, which means peace and quiet and a real sense of freedom. It’s all the better if you’re the adventurous type, as you’ll have the chance to scramble around on the crags to your heart’s content. It’s a far cry from wide paths with markers and amenities, and gives a fascinating insight into how people would have navigated the region in the past - expect to work up a sweat and maybe pick up a few scratches here and there, but well worth it we think. Rest assured, you’ll have plenty of time to unwind at the end of the day.
Fly to Granada, Malaga or Almeria airports and you will be met by a guide and transported to Lanjaron.
