Classic Cape Town wine tour

Cape Town wine tour -Empty wine glass

What more could you ask for in a day? Visit vineyards and a seriously good olive oil producer in the company of your guide, a passionate foodie and local resident on this Cape Town wine tour. You'll get stuck into some fine wines and great food in beautiful surroundings.

South Africa produces some fine wines and its stature as an olive oil producer is growing fast. The area around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek is the premier wine destination for any visitor to Cape Town. This is one of the most scenic wine areas in the country, filled with elegant historic buildings and is quite simply gorgeous. Stellenbosch is an oak lined university town with a mixture of Cape Dutch and English architecture. It has a fantastic shopping area, and loads of little cafes and pubs. Franschhoek on the other hand is tiny. It is the gourmet capital of the country and you will leave with a list of restaurants that you have not tried, but will need to return to experience.

From Cape Town you'll visit several estates and enjoy lunch at a top restaurant. First stop is Morgenster, known for its fine Bordeaux style reds and award winning olive oil. You'll enjoy the wine tasting and get a chance to try a formal olive oil tasting. The farm is set perfectly amidst panoramic views of the mountains. Next to Morgenster is Vergelegen probably the must-visit vineyard in the area. Vergelegen wins loads of awards for its wines and a tasting isn't to be missed, on top of that there are extensive gardens and forests to explore in this historic 1700's estate. Finally, you'll enjoy a short historical tour of Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in South Africa and enjoy lunch at one of the top restaurants in the area.

Absolutely. In our opinion, there isn't a better day to be had than one which involves vineyards (assuming you like wine!). There are very few reasons why anyone wouldn't enjoy this, there is no prior knowledge required, just bring yourself, your taste buds and your appetite. This Cape Town wine tour is private, so can pretty much run at a pace to suit you. Just give Pamela an indication of your vini-cultural interests and she will craft a day to suit. Her focus is always on small farms and passionate wine makers. So no, unless you are into big commercialized wine farms – you will go nowhere near them and the big tour buses!

Reviews of this experience

  1. We're now back at home and I'm looking out at a rather wet Liverpool day, a great contrast from our marvellous few days in Cape Town. This is to thank you for being a wonderful guide for our trip to Stellenbosch and for enabling us to learn so much about South African wines in a short time - you've started us on a long journey, I think, and I've already got sawinesonline.co.uk saved in my favourites! I think you'll understand that Albie Koch was the stand out, although being able to tell the very good sommelier at the 12 Apostles that we'd met Jose Conde gave us more than a few brownie points! Can I also congratulate you on choosing Overture for our lunch? You'd obviously read us right from our e-mail correspondence, but how you managed to fix the weather is beyond us! This goes into our very best meals anywhere category, along with the breakfast on the shoreline of Lake Annecy and the dinner overlooking the Mediterranean at Eze, close to Monte Carlo. Exquisite combinations of setting, food and, of course, occasion.

You helped give Jill an introduction to South Africa that make us determined to return and see and learn more - thank you for this. We'll certainly recommend you to friends and would hope to make use of your services on another visit.
