Hidden Italy - main photo

Le Marche sits in central Italy and though you may not have heard of it before, it has everything you could hope to find: beach, mountains, friendly locals, good food and wine and old world charm. Stay in "The Hideaway", a restored 17th century farmhouse in Sibillini National Park and make it your HQ for mountain hikes, vineyard tours or a relaxing romantic break.

Sibillini National Park is a relatively new creation, established in 1993. The Hideaway is located on the eastern edge of the park in a valley just outside the town of Amandola, which sits at an elevation of 500m. The park is filled with mountain peaks, plenty of flora and fauna and you may see porcupine, deer, wolves and mountain cats. But there are also many villages so it is possible to visit churches, museums and castles without leaving the park. This is a great way to mix traditional Italian sightseeing with other activities like mountain biking, hiking and guided walking tours.

Hideaway owners Sarah and Mark will make sure that your excursions are perfectly planned. Staying here is great for people who want to have control over their time away - you can book day trips including hiking in the nearby mountains, a visit to the spa town of Sarnano, as well as visiting ancient castles and towns accessible by foot or bike. Winter trips are also a possibility as a ski resort is only half an hour from the farmhouse. With a lovely pool and beautifully furnished rooms, however, it's going to be hard to tear yourself away for the day!

This is a great way for you to experience hidden Italy, away from touristy cities like Florence and Venice. The Hideaway is perfect for someone who wants to experience the surroundings but does not want to give up any of the modern conveniences of home, like internet. You may not be the only ones there during your stay, but each accommodation in the farmhouse does have its own private space so you can keep to yourselves if you really want. To truly experience the region you should hire a car so if you're not up for that, best to find a more urban place where everything's within walking distance and there's a central public transportation system. Also if you're an animal lover have no fear, pets are welcome!
