Itinerary

Overview

  • Embrace the great outdoors in the Drakensberg, staying in a foodie hotel
  • Tour the Battlefields of Fugitives Drift
  • Spot the Big Five at a private game reserve
  • Relax at a beach lodge set in coastal forest
  • Superb snorkelling & diving
KwaZulu Natal is arguably one of the most diverse of Africa’s provinces offering a variety of interesting experiences from walking in the Drakensberg, historical battlefields, big game experiences and stretches of wild coast line on the Indian Ocean. Nestled in beautiful rolling hills in the Drakensberg, your first port of call is the owner run and managed Cleopatra’s Farmhouse. Not only is the hotel in a beautiful location, it is also foodie heaven, with 7 course dinners served each night lovingly prepared and lovingly prepared with produce from the organic garden. This stunning countryside is the perfect place to enjoy the great outdoors and reconnect with nature, with opportunities to go hiking, horse riding or fishing. Leaving the Drakensberg escarpment behind, your journey continues north east to Fugitives Drift, the site of the bloody Anglo-Zulu battles of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift. A guided tour of the battlefields, whilst a sobering experience, is an absolute must for visitors to the area who are keen to understand more about the region’s history. The tour guides at Fugitives Drift are second to none and will bring the history to life.

From the Battlefields, to a Game Reserve, you then continue to Thanda, a 14,000 hectare private gamer reserve. Staying in a sumptuous tent with outstanding views, you will spend mornings and late afternoons on safari, looking for the Big Five and stopping off for sundowners along the way. There is much more to the animal life here than the Big Five, however, and the guides are just as passionate about the small insects and plant life as they are about the larger animals. During your time at Thanda, not only will you learn about the flora and fauna, but there will also be time to relax, either at the spa, in the lounge or around the pool.

The last stop on your holiday is the Indian Ocean where you will stay at Thonga Beach Lodge. The coast line here has long stretches of beach and crashing waves and is the perfect place to go for romantic walks. The lodge is hidden in the coastal forest and offers excellent snorkelling and diving opportunities, kayaking on Lake Sibaya which is Southern Africa’s largest inland lake, with a good chance of seeing crocodile and hippo, open ocean experiences, guided walking, fishing or Tsonga cultural experiences.

Getting there

South African Airways, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways have good regular connections from Johannesburg to Durban which work well with overnight flight from London to Johannesburg from £950-£1250.

In addition with Durban now being an international airport you are able to fly directly in from the Middle East and Emirates often have excellent offers.

Flight prices on this route are always cheaper booked in advance, particularly when flying during UK school holidays. If you are booking anything less than a month prior to departure expect to pay through Virgin and BA tend to offer flight sales around September and October, which are worth looking out for.

Please let us know your preferred departure airport and we would be pleased to quote for a flight inclusive ATOL protected package.

Price includes

Accommodation with meals as specified and car hire for the duration with comprehensive insurance and unlimited mileage

When is best?

This holiday is available all year round, although be warned that accommodation will book out early for the Christmas period.

October - March is summer in South Africa and is the best time to view turtles hatching. At this time of year, temperatures will be 30C and over with occasional rain.

April - September is winter, which means sunny days with temperatures up to 25C and no rain. The bush is less dense at this time of year, so wildlife spotting is best in June, July & August.

  • Thanks for organising an excellent holiday for us. It's my first time using Tourdust and I've been really impressed and will certainly be recommending you to friends and family. You provided an excellent level of service all the way through, and the bespoke nature of the trip was fantastic whilst being really good value for money.
    Key highlights:
    - Le Kasbah de Toubkal blew us away - one not to miss!
    - The trek was amazing and my kids loved it. The camping was really fun, the food was excellent, and I'd particularly call out our guide Rashid who was fantastic show especially with my kids.
    - Riad Adore was outstanding - far exceeding my expectations - it was beautiful and we were very well looked after
    - Le Doux Tour was luxurious and a nice relaxing way to end the holiday.
    - Logistics were great and our main driver Mustapha was brilliant

If there was one build / thing I would change, it's a very small one but some candles / lanterns to use in the evening whilst camping would have made it easier to stay outside for a bit longer.
