Itinerary

Overview

  • Three day mule supported trek to Havasu Falls
  • Guided Hikes in Arches & Canyonlands National Parks
  • Guided tour of Monument Valley
  • For children aged 8+
This holiday begins in Las Vegas (or Phoenix if you prefer) and after allowing a couple of nights to recover from the flight, you will head to Peach Springs on the original Route 66. The next day, you will begin your three day trek, hiking through the Havasupai Reservation passing through desert landscape until you reach your campground, from where you will spend the next days exploring the three main waterfalls in the area, 2,500ft below the Canyon rim. There will be plenty of chances to stop by swimming holes and marvel at the vast cascades and the spactacular scenery. Your third and final day of the trek sees you heading back to civilisation; you will pick up your car and drive on to Tusayan where you will stay the night. The next day you will be driving through the Grand Canyon National Park - you will want to start early so that there is plenty of time to stop and look at the views along the way. Once you leave the Grand Canyon behind, you will head further to the desert before reaching Monument Valley with perhaps some of the most iconic desert scenery in the world. Here, you will have the chance to go on a 4WD tour of the valley lead by a Navajo guide, who will tell you about the Navajo culture and will also point out some of the more famous Western movie locations.

From Monument Valley, you will then drive north into Utah towards Moab. If the Monument Valley tour has piqued your interest in Native American culture, you may like to make a small detour en-route to Newspaper Rock, with some absolutely fantastic examples of Native American petroglyphs.

Your base near Moab is in a cabin on the banks of the Colorado River where you can spend the evenings relaxing on the terrace. During the days, you will have the chance to explore the two famous and most scenic national parks in the region; Arches & Canyonlands. Your guide will take you on a 3 day guided hike in the labyrinth of the Fiery Furnace in Arches, to discover hidden arches and some extraordinary rock formations, leaving you free to explore the rest of the park at your leisure in the afternoon. The following day, you will have a full day hike in Canyonlands National Park, with some breath-taking views to rival the Grand Canyon.

You will then have a free day to spend, either relaxing at your lodge, or exploring Moab, which is a lovely town with some excellent independent restaurants. Then it's a 3 hour drive to Salt Lake City where there will be time for some last minute shopping before you head back home.

Getting there

This holiday begins in Las Vegas and ends in Salt Lake City (although you can finish in Denver if you prefer.) We can arrange flights for you, please get in touch to discuss your quote.

When is best?

The best times of year for this trip are Easter and autumn when the temperature in the Grand Canyon is cooler; it is too hot to do the trek in the summer months.

Is it for me?

The Grand Canyon hike is available for children aged 8+. You will be walking 40km over the three days although you will only be carrying your water and day packs - mules will carry food and camping equipment.

There is a reasonable amount of driving in this holiday. We have road tested this trip ourselves with a 7 year old and found the distances manageable. The driving is fairly easy and often through scenic landscapes, but you will sometimes covering up to 5 hours in a day.

  • Everything worked perfectly! We all found our trekking experience to be the best part of our adventures in Morocco. We were particularly pleased with our guide, Hussain; he did a brilliant job. He is thoughtful, knowledgable, and sweet. He represents you well.

  • Thanks for organising an excellent holiday for us. It's my first time using Tourdust and I've been really impressed and will certainly be recommending you to friends and family. You provided an excellent level of service all the way through, and the bespoke nature of the trip was fantastic whilst being really good value for money.
    Key highlights:
    - Le Kasbah de Toubkal blew us away - one not to miss!
    - The trek was amazing and my kids loved it. The camping was really fun, the food was excellent, and I'd particularly call out our guide Rashid who was fantastic show especially with my kids.
    - Riad Adore was outstanding - far exceeding my expectations - it was beautiful and we were very well looked after
    - Le Doux Tour was luxurious and a nice relaxing way to end the holiday.
    - Logistics were great and our main driver Mustapha was brilliant

If there was one build / thing I would change, it's a very small one but some candles / lanterns to use in the evening whilst camping would have made it easier to stay outside for a bit longer.

  • Truly another world. The sky was enormous and the summits snow covered. Blue irises, wild herbs and fruit trees flowered on the slopes. Even as I toiled up the dry river bed I gazed in admiration.

Without exception, everyone was courteous and welcoming. Food was good ( and far too plentiful); accommodation clean. Above all-everything worked! A pick-up was promised for 9.00am. At 8.55 the doorbell rang. Impeccable.

No praise is too high for the organisation and staff. I am definitely going back.
