Best of Kenya Family Safari

As far as we are concerned this is the best of Kenya for families, combining some of our favourite family friendly camps and a lovely blend of wilderness, adventure and relaxation. On holiday it is all about getting the balance right and this holiday offers the perfect combination of what we believe to be the best bush camp in Africa (Laikipia Wilderness Camp), excellent wildlife in the Masai Mara and a wonderful barefoot beach experience on the Kenya Coast.

Itinerary

Overview

After a long flight, we recommend a first night in Nairobi. For a brief one night stay, the Southern Sun Mayfair fits the bill, with attractive gardens and two swimming pools. However a superb upgrade option would be to the Giraffe Manor. Time (and sleep) allowing, a visit to the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Centre is a wonderful gentle start to your holiday, children usually love the close encounters with the elephant and rhino orphans and the opportunity to feed the giraffe.

From Nairobi you'll head North to the stunning wilderness of Laikipia North. The Laikipia region is a vast expanse of wilderness spreading from the foothills of Mount Kenya towards the Rift Valley. Unlike Kenya’s prominent National Parks, this is an area where other tourists are few and far between and where game drives are combined with game walks, swimming in rivers and climbing crags - very much an 'out of Africa' experience.

This is a small, simple camp in a stunning location offering a rare balance of ambience, comfort and superb wildlife without being ridiculously expensive. There are only five tents (each built on a platform with a private veranda, proper beds and en suite bathroom). The Camp is ideal for families, children can go on adventure walks, swim, raft and fish in the river and scramble and climb on nearby outcrops. The owners have three of their own young children and will suggest a programme designed to suit you. We recommend a minimum stay of three nights, but you could happily stay a whole week. Some tents are close together specifically for families and all of the tents can comfortably sleep three, or four if it is two younger children.

After three days in the wilderness you'll fly South to the rolling plains and dense concentrations of wildlife in the Masai Mara. One of Africa's premier safari destinations, the Masai Mara is wonderful year round, but particularly during the summer months, when the sight of the wildebeest migration is a true once in a lifetime experience. Offering the perfect counter-balance to the wilderness of Laikipia Wilderness Camp. There is always a strong chance of seeing lion in the park, leopard and cheetah are rarer but sightings are possible. Elephant, buffalo and wildebeest are also common. The rivers play host to crocs and hippos and if you are very lucky you might see the fantastic spectacle of a migration river crossing.

From the bush we recommend winding down on the Kenyan Coast. One of our favourite options, the barefoot and independent Funzi Keys which offers just the right balance between comfort and simplicity. You will stay in a spacious villa with large central pool for children to enjoy. Families can expect relaxed days spent on the beach, quality time together, good food and friendly service - the perfect end to an active holiday in Kenya. Kids can enjoy swimming, snorkelling, exploring Zanzibar island and local village visits if they still have the energy. Funzi Keys is best for those who appreciate an independent laid back atmosphere. If you prefer somewhere with more facilities, then we recommend Pinewood which is a small hotel with tennis court, spa, extensive dive and water sports centre.

Getting there

International flights from the UK to Kenya typically cost £550 - £1250 return per person (see below for more detail) depending on the airline and when you are travelling. Please get in touch for a flight inclusive quote.
Direct Flights from the UK (London Heathrow only): £650 - £1250 return
British Airways and Kenya Airways fly direct from London Heathrow to Nairobi. Prices start from £750 return but direct flights at this price are usually only available if booking very early or for visits out of the school holidays. During school holiday periods, prices are usually over £1000 return.
Indirect Flights from the UK: £550 - £900 return
KLM flights via Amsterdam are a superb alternative to direct flights, particularly if you are flying from Manchester, Glasgow or other regional airports, where you would need to stop anyway. Prices start from £550 return, and are usually available under £800 pp year round as long as you have a little flexibility in your dates. Qatar, Turkish and Ethiopian Airlines offer slightly less convenient one stop flights with longer stop-overs / less convenient flight times (e.g. Turkish lands at 4am in Nairobi). We sometimes recommend these flights for those on a tight budget or those late booking during peak periods when flight prices on BA, Kenya Airways or KLM can double.

Price includes

All accommodation, park fees, meals and transfers quoted in the itinerary.

Excludes international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, drinks, additional activities and items of a personal nature

When is best?

It is best to avoid the long rains that run from the second half of March, April, May and into early June. During this period it tends to rain through the night and into the morning. It is usually possible to get a dry spell between 10am and 2pm for getting out on safari.

The short rains bring some rain during September and October, but this is less of an impediment and they have usually cleared up by October half term.

December, January, July and August are peak season, expect flight costs to be substantially higher.

  • If you’re looking for a more personal experience of Kenya, something a little different from the standard safari and beach package holidays, then you should definitely speak to Tourdust!

We decided to have a family holiday with our two teenage boys in Kenya in 2014, a decision that turned out to be far from straight-forward as the FCO extended their no-essential travel guidance area by area in the months leading up to our holiday. After researching the travel companies specialising in Kenya , we chose Tourdust to organise our holiday, partly based on their highly informative website but mainly based on a conversation with Ben, who within a matter of minutes clearly understood what we were looking for.

Ben’s recommendation of the Laikipia Wilderness Camp, followed by the Sosian Ranch and then the Msambweni Beach House was absolutely perfect for us. Everywhere we went the experience was personalised, the service was outstanding and the quality of facilities was second to none. Yes, we did safari drives to see the fantastic range of wildlife in the area, but we also swam in the rivers, rode camels, went on game walks and ate delicious meals cooked on an open camp fire before sleeping out under the endless African skies listening to the lions roaring! Then a flight down to the coast and we relaxed in the luxury of the a villa overlooking the Indian Ocean, with massages on the beach, personal staff on hand and nothing too much trouble.

We knew that we didn’t want a standard package safari and beach holiday but what we got was beyond all our expectations – a truly personal, family experience of Kenya that we will remember forever!

  • The holiday was amazing! Everything we wanted it to be! The safari was so we'll organized and our guide was very good. All the accommodation was superb. At the Masaai village we stayed in a mud hut which was different to the tent described in the itinerary, but so much better.

Pinewoods resort was lovely especially the staff who couldn't have looked after us any better. The food was exceptional.

  • Accommodation and food at Karen Rock House were good. It was very quiet there as we were the only guests. Our transport, guide (Elijah) and driver (Oliver) were excellent. Elijah was very informative and patiently answered our questions about everything we saw. Our first day was very full, a long drive to Hell’s Gate, bike ride and gorge walk. Elijah suggested that we postpone the boat trip on Lake Navaisha to the morning we left Nakuru rather doing it on the way and this worked well. On the bike ride, our youngest struggled with an adult sized bike with bald tyres. Fine for us and our eldest though. The gorge walk was great as was the boat trip on Lake Navaisha.

Lake Nakuru Lodge accommodation, food and setting was excellent - as were the game drives with Oliver and Elijah. We saw a lot more here and close up than we did in Ol Kinyei and the Masai Mara.

Maji Moto Camp was an interesting experience. Again, we were the only visitors and the facilities & food were good. We visited the school before travelling to the Mara Adventure Camp but could have spent longer as there was a lot to see and our children enjoyed playing football etc with the school children.

The Adventure Camp was brilliant. We had a packed schedule of game drives (up at 5.30 every morning) and George and Wilson (guide and driver) were a lot of fun. They played football with us and were very entertaining on bush walks and game drives. We felt all the staff at the Adventure Camp worked really hard to make the experience an enjoyable one - from preparing the food, supplying endless hot water and tea and making sure we got to see what we wanted. The Ol Kinyei conservancy is beautiful (although we saw more at Lake Nakuru).

Our itinerary was good - it was busy and varied which suited us very well. We felt a bit rushed on Day 1 - in hindsight, it really was too much for one day. The day we travelled to the Masai Adventure Camp was also time pressured and we had a to cut short our visit to the school.

Overall, 5/5 - an unforgettable experience.
