Yurt holiday in the Tanat Valley

Spend your holiday or weekend in a yurt in Wales, in the heart of the Tanat Valley. There are just two yurts on the five acres of wild meadowland here. With woods just footsteps away, and the coast and Snowdonia National Park within easy reach, it’s got location on its side, too.

Detailed description

This beautiful yurt site lies in secluded meadows at the foot of the Berwyn Hills in the Tanat Valley in Wales. The location, coupled with the fact there are only two yurts onsite, makes this place a pretty tranquil place to stay. What’s more, because this is a small family business, it’s got a really personal, friendly feel, and the yurts themselves are exceptionally homely. If you’re after something a little extra, the team here can provide Reiki, massage treatments, reflexology and acupuncture. And if you’re holidaying with kids, there are art and craft sessions with CRB-checked workshop leaders.

What better way to spend your holiday than in a yurt in Wales? The real selling point about this place is its away-from-it-all setting that still manages to be within easy reach of plenty of things to see and do. If you don’t want to waste time in the car, then a day’s rambling through woodland, meadows and up to the Berwyn Hills is probably your best bet. If you’d rather take things up a notch or two, there’s the watersports at nearby Lake Bala. And, an hour’s drive away, you’ve got the Centre for Alternative Technology. But, in actual fact, there’s no real reason why you should see any of it if you don’t want to. Yurts make great bases for families and friends wanting to enjoy each other’s company – stock up on supplies, fire up the onsite barbecue, and hunker down. Guitars, board games and party tricks optional.

Accommodation & food

Yurts are much more spacious than their smaller relations – the tipi – so, it’s not surprising some of the past guests who’ve stayed here have called them ‘massive’. They’ve been kitted out with comfy furniture with lots of cushions and throws, and they’re open-plan, so don’t expect stacks of privacy. That said, you won’t be doing everything on show – there’s a communal wash-house with a shower, toilet and sink. In terms of food, there is a communal kitchen on site, you will you need to bring your own provisions. Local shops like a butchers, off-license and grocers are a short drive away, and you can buy fresh free-range eggs and honey on site – plus, if you’ve come at the right time, you can also buy fresh, organic veg from your hosts.

Is it for me?

Yurts are communal, open-plan spaces, so it’s probably best you know the people you plan on staying here with pretty well. That said, if you don’t, you will do by the end of your stay. Groups of nature-loving friends will love it – spend the day walking in the nearby hills and head back to the yurt for a cosy evening around the barbecue. It’s great for kids, too – though city-dwelling little ‘uns might be surprised at the lack of tarmac.

Itinerary & things to do

A stay at here isn’t about sticking to a schedule, in fact, that’s probably one of the main reasons you come here – to get away from all that. There are no timetables of ‘things you must do’, you basically take charge of your own time and use it as you wish.

If you’d like a tiny bit of structure to your day, you can book Reiki, massage treatments, acupuncture and reflexology sessions, and art and craft workshops can be set up if you’re on holiday with kids.

Apart from that, the rest of your time will probably revolve around countryside walks – the Berwyn Hills are close by, as too, are the waterfalls at Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, and the lakes of Vyrnwy and Bala. Lake Vyrnwy is an RSPB site with arts and crafts and a sculpture park, while Lake Bala offers watersports like canoeing, rafting and sailing.

A little further afield – about an hour’s drive - is Machynlleth where you’ll find the Centre for Alternative Technology, and then you’ve got the seaside at places like Aberdovy, Aberystwyth and Dolgellau.

  1. I had just the best time here. It was peaceful, beautiful and unlike anywhere else I have stayed.
The yurts are very comfortable and warm and the kitchen area was unexpectedly good, had everything we could want.
Local pubs were great and our visit to Chirk Castle was fantastic!
My one and only negative would be (and this is very much a personal thing) is that we had the facilites to ourselves and that was amazing but if the other yurt had have been booked, we probably would have not been able to spend so much time in the kitchen area or let ourselves go as much. However, this wasn't the case, and we had the best holiday!!

  2. Our stay was fantastic. Both Nick and Kate were so obliging (and Nick's mum on our late arrival....!)
The two yurt are beautifully set out, and are a wonderful place to stay. With the gas heater we were plenty warm enough even in late October. The kitchen with wood burner is a lovely place to cook and meet other guests. There's even stuff to read and games to play.
The shower and toilet block is very clean and the shower hot and spacious.

Overall I can thoroughly recommend the Broome Retreat to anyone wanting to try out a yurt or just have a different type of holiday.
