Most visitors to Africa's most south westerly point at the Cape of Good Hope head straight to the the lighthouse to 'tick off' another must see place on their list. This two day Cape Point hike allows you to get well and truly off the beaten track and experience this wild and rugged national park by foot, away from the crowds.

Detailed description

The Cape Peninsula, just south of Cape Town, forms Africa's most south westerly point. Part of the Table Mountain National Park, the breath taking, rugged terrain make it a wonderful place for nature lovers to enjoy and explore. Close to where the Atlantic & Indian oceans converge, the area, also known as the Cape of Good Hope, is home to around 2,200 species of plants, including the renowned indigenous fynbos. There is also an abundance of wildlife, with the Cape Mountain Zebra and large antelope such as the Eland, Klipspringer, Bontebok and Red Hartebeest all calling the area home, not to mention the baboons and reptiles to be found there!

This two day Cape Point Hike sees you exploring the wild Cape Point Nature Reserve, part of the Table Mountain National Park, on a guided hike. Covering a distance of around 36 kms over 2 days, you will explore the rugged landscape by foot, lead by an expert guide. After your first day of hiking, you will overnight in a hut in the park, an experience in itself - how often have you been able to overlook two different oceans from your verandah? As you enjoy the magnificent sunset over a barbecue dinner, you can prepare yourself for another day's walking smug in the knowledge that all of the day-trippers have left the park, leaving you to commune with nature! With all of your baggage transport taken care of, all you need to worry about is keeping your camera close by, to snap the Cape Mountain Zebra, tortoises, snakes and antelope that you may see along the way. And if you're there between June & November, you might even get to see whales breaching on this spectacular coastline! .

Accommodation & food

A great feature of this excursion is that all meals and snacks are not only included in the price, but carried for you so all you need to bring during hikes is a water bottle and a day pack with minimal supplies.

On day one there will be several stops for snacking to keep energy levels up as well as lunch on the route. A full dinner at night will be offered once you have reached the overnight accommodation, which are basic huts in the National Park and include running water. Day two includes breakfast and snacks.

Is it for me?

Although your guides have planned ahead and include "escape points" in their routes in case people can't go the distance, they do ask that participants have some kind of hiking background. Obviously if you just want to lounge around on your holiday, don't book this hike. Also if you think you'd be nervous about seeing antelope, snakes and baboons without the security of a vehicle, don't book this hike either. The guides know what they're doing and would never lead the group into anything dangerous but if you know you'd have issues with that aspect of the tour, please take that into consideration. Don't forget your hiking boots, extra layers and of course, your camera.

Itinerary & things to do

Day One: You'll be picked up from your Cape Town accommodation and driven in a 4x4 to the Cape Point hike starting point in the Cape Point Reserve. The first day's hike lasts approximately seven hours (including stops) and covers 15km. If you still have energy after all of that, there is an optional additional 4km hike to reach the famous lighthouse landmark at Cape Point. You will stay overnight in permanent huts that have been constructed on the DeGama Peak.

Day Two: The second day's hike is longer but not as taxing as the terrain is a bit more forgiving than day one. It covers 21km and follows the coast along the Atlantic side of the Cape. The hike will not only impress with the scenery but also the flora and fauna there. Previous hikers have seen: zebra, antelope, bontebok, tortoises, various snakes and plenty of birds. You'll have an experienced guide with you all the way so don't worry about the animals you may meet on the path. Past hikers have said that while on the excursion, they were inspired to keep going and be number one in line so they'd be the first to see whatever animals happened to come along.

  1. I heard whale song as I walked among the coast through a trail set among the unique vegetation. At the coast I saw more whales than anywhere else, a mother and calf drifted slowly in the water. At the peninsula we watched a seal batter an octopus on the rocks then gobble it up.
The barbecue dinner at the hut was fantastic, even difficult vegetarians like me were catered for. The hot shower a welcome relief and the comfy cots a treat.
The next day we followed a family of ostrich (not intentionally) as they used the trail to make their journey.

Kevin makes a great guide, knows every inch of the cape and respects it. 10/10.

  2. A fantastic 2 day hike through the varied landscape of the Cape with the outward and return journeys being entirely different. Magnificent sea views, wildlife, and the abundant flowering fynbos make for a unique experience and endless photo opportunities. Kevin's in depth knowledge and empathy with the area makes him an informative guide and great companion for the trip. We recommend it highly.

  3. As an inexperienced hiker I was worried that this would be too difficult for me. The experience was great, walking along the coast listening to whale song was fantastic! The guides were great, full of information about the native flora, and the barnecue was fantastic- almost as good as the sunset from the Cape! I recommend this to everyone! The hike was so much fun that my friend was hooked- he even gave up smoking (for the duration of the hike!) so that he could hike in the lead and see all the animals first!
