One of the finer short treks in the Imlil area that doesn't include Toubkal, this three day trek traverses from Imlil past lovely Berber Villages to the Ourika Valley, finishing at the waterfalls at Setti Fatma.
The High Atlas Mountains are situated just a couple of hours drive from Marrakech. Most day trippers head for the Ourika Valley, whilst trekkers tend to head to the Imlil Valley. The Ourika Valley is very picturesque with a beautiful river, lush green banks and a number of small Berber Villages along the its course. The Ourika Valley is famous primarily for its seven waterfalls. Because it is easier reached from Marrakech it does tend to fill up with day trippers. The Imlil Valley situated at the foot of Mount Toubkal (the highest in North Africa), is the main trailhead for treks up Toubkal in the surrounding Toubkal National Park.
This moderate three day trek starts in Imlil and traverses East over two passes to the Ourika Valley. The first pass out of Imlil, Tizi n’Tamatert (2,279m) offers expansive views down both the Imnane Valley and the Ait Mizane Valley. The pass of Tizi n’Ibbasen (3,172m) also offers stunning mountain views. There are a number of small berber Villages along the route, including Ouanesekra, Ibbasen and Timichchi. On the last day you descend into the Ourika Valley past a number of riverside villages towards Setti Fatma and the seven waterfalls.
If you would like us to arrange your entire stay in Morocco, including airport transfers, a night in a local Berber guest house in Imlil and 2 nights staying in a boutique riad after your trek, please select the Trek & Accommodation Package in the drop down box at the bottom of this page.
This is a moderate trekking itinerary suitable for anybody with a decent level of fitness. Treks vary from 5 hours to 7 hours per day, at altitudes varying from 1700 to 3200m. It is arguably one of the nicest treks in the area for those short on time who don’t want to tackle Toubkal. As with all our Atlas Mountain treks, accommodation is simple and basic, but perfectly comfortable.

My boyfriend and went to Morocco in March to enjoy the stunning scenery of the high atlas mountains. Ben helped us choose the most appropriate trek for our needs and the time of year (i.e. avoiding snowy paths). We starting in Imlill after an amazing night at the Dar Adrar hotel where we feasted on mint tea and biscuits on the roof top terrace before enjoying a open fire in our bedroom.
The next morning we left for our 3 day walk. Our guide Abdul was both knowledgeable and fun and paced the walk perfectly. The food was beyond our expectations as we were served fresh hot tagines on top of mountains and as much tea as we could take. The 3 day trip covered mountains, valleys, windy passes and picturesque villages and we were guided through each with expertise and patience (for our continual photo taking). We spent the evening playing football with the children in the village, demolishing yet more delicious tagines and taking in the spectacular scenery.
Throughout the trek we felt very well looked after and although the high Atlas mountains are a popular hiking destination, we still felt that we were walking through a land that time (and tourists) forgot. For this reason we would recommend low season - although bring a good sleeping bag and warm clothes, as what the mountains lack in tourists in the winter months, they make up for in sub zero temperatures at night!
Seamless logistics, professional guides, exceptional food and stunning scenery made this a trip to remember!
