Island Hopping in the Aegean

Island Hopping in the Aegean

Explore by sea kayak the pristine coastline of two Aegean Islands - one of them entirely uninhabited. Covering 75km in four days, explore deserted beaches, rocky coastlines and then camp wild on the beaches each night.

The islands of Milos, Kimolos and Poliegos form the Cyclades islands, in the Aegean Sea, South East of the Greek mainland. Famed as the birth place of the Venus de Milo, Milos is a stunning island with spectacular rock formations and beautiful beaches. Kimolos is a mountainous island, mostly inaccessible by road. It has a population of 500 people, all living in a single village on the SE coast. The rest of the island remains deserted. Poliegos is the largest uninhabited island in the Aegean sea. The western side comprises low rolling hills and long sandy beaches, in stark contrast to the eastern side of jagged peaks and huge, towering cliffs. Both Kimolos and Poliegos offer a truly unique experience; quiet, undiscovered Greece, well off the beaten track.

This kayaking expedition visits two largely uninhabited islands in the Aegean. Kimolos, a 1 km crossing from Milos and Poliegos, a 3 km crossing from Kimolos. The trip starts and finishes in Milos, circumnavigating both islands. Covering a total distance of approximately 75km, you will be kayaking around four hours each day, with the remainder of your time spent honing your kayaking skills, snorkelling, exploring the island by foot and, of course, relaxing on the beach. Each night of your expedition will be spent camping rough, either on, or very near, to the beaches. You don't have to be an expert kayaker for this trip, but previous experience is required.

The aim of the expedition is to circumnavigate the Islands of Kimolos & Poliegos from the starting point on Milos (about 75km) in four days. You will be covering around 15 - 20km per day, which equates to around four hours. The start location and direction of travel will depend on the conditions, on day one, as well as the forecast and will be decided last minute, if necessary.

This expedition has a maximum of 8 participants.

Some paddling experience is required, though not necessary on the sea. You should have enough stamina to paddle up to 20km per day. You should be comfortable with the idea of paddling in moderate wind and waves, as challenging conditions are likely on some of the days.

All camping equipment needs to be provided by you, so travelling light is a must. It also goes without saying that with basic accommodation and self-catering, this trip is only applicable for those willing to rough it.
