I enjoyed a one week stay in Orvieto, Italy, along with six other participants, guided by hosts, Kristi and Bill Steiner. We stayed in a comfortable convent, studied and lived "Orvieto style". The Steiners provided us with an introduction to the city management, a behind-the-scenes look at local folk customs, a vineyard tour and an authentic cooking experience in the kitchen of a four-star restaurant. Yet, we also had time to luxuriate in picnic lunches and sunny afternoon walks.
This experience is unforgettable!

Another great experience in Italy is traveling in the Abruzzo area. A couple from Australia run the tours (Luciana is a native of Abruzzo). You can check out their website at www.absolutelyabruzzo.com Really great immersion in the culture
Happy traveling

Hi Giles,
A reply to your question on Twitter from @hackneye (who is the author of the Frommer's Florence and Tuscany Day by Day & Frommer's Tuscany and Umbria With Your Family):
@hackneye Orvieto makes a decent base, actually. Easy drive to S Tusc + Todi/Perugia and fast train links to Rome, Florence, Arezzo.

Hi,
Obviously Rome is a must - you just can't miss the Coloseum. But as an area I would go for Tuscany and Umbria every time. There's Assissi, with the 2 basilicas of St. Francis, one on top of the other; there's Perugia old town; then there is Florence which also is unmissable, with the cathedral, Michaelangelo's statue of David and art masterpieces on every corner! But my favourite places are San Gimignano - a small town on top of a hill where the locals used to build towers to show how rich they were, and Siena with the central square shaped like a sea shell. And everywhere little hill top villages with fabulous views and fabulous ice cream!
Have a wonderful holiday!
